This is not a complete list by any stretch of the imagination. These are but a few. I really think that these women, as well as most women artists, need to be recognised fully and as equals of their male counterparts. When we think of Latin American art we usually think of the great artists like Diego Rivera (Mexico) and Wilfredo Lam (Cuba) and the only woman that comes to mind (to most people) is Frida Kahlo. But Frida was not a great artist, at least not in my appreciation, and much less when I compare her with some of these. Besides the idea that it is only Frida has to end and the sooner the better. I would encourage all art bloggers to blog about women artists from anywhere in the world.

When you think The Moody Blues you think class act to the nth degree! Yes! Call them Progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock, whatever, I call them Phenomenal! I caught them in Atlanta, Georgia in late 1973 and it was a tremendous concert!

So here is one of their iconic numbers «Tuesday Afternoon». Seemingly fitting for a Tuesday morning, afternoon, or evening. This song was first released in their 1967 album Days of Future Passed as part of «The Afternoon» and was called «Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)». But when it was released as a single in 1968 it was renamed «Tuesday Afternoon». It was written by Justin Hayward, singer and guitarist for the band.

Comenzamos con Zilia Sánchez, pintora cubana de 96 años que radica en Puerto Rico. Estudió en la prestigiosa academia la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes «San Alejandro de La Habana. En 1953 tubo su primera exposición y después de la llegada de Fidel se marchó a Nueva York y luego a San Juan, Puerto Rico. Zilia es una feminista y de las pioneras en las artes contemporáneas. Su serie de Amazonas hace relucir la figura femenina destacándolas como guerreras.

A veces une lo que es la escultura con la pintura sobre tela y crea estos cuadros tan fenomenales…

Zilia nació en La Habana en 1926 de madre cubana y padre español y comenzó su carrera artística de diseñadora y también de pintora abstracta para grupos de teatro. Lamentablemente fuera de Puerto Rico apenas se conoce su trabajo artístico. Zilia es, como tantas mujeres artistas, dejada a un lado y ya es hora que todas tengan su merecido lugar en la historia del arte, contemporánea como antigua.

Bueno… Solo faltan unos días y se acabó el 2022 y comenzará el 2023, como pasa todos los años, lo único que cambia es el numero. Pero nos imaginamos que ha terminado algo y comenzado otra cosa, y que siga la imaginación pues eso nos lleva a la noche vieja y sus celebraciones tradicionales que siempre molan. Ojalá que bailéis, bebáis, comáis o cenéis bien y que la paséis bomba con vuestros seres queridos o no tan queridos, pero venga, en paz y alegría (y el alcohol, siempre, con moderación).

Dejamos atrás un año que nos trajo una guerra en Europa, ni se cuantas inundaciones, riadas, tormentas, una inmensa ola de calor que abrazó a Europa y no nos soltó hasta ya bien entrado noviembre, incertidumbre política, mas cara la luz, el pescado, la carne, el jamón y hasta las olivitas que adornan y acompañan al gin tonic, pero lo hemos pagado todo porque vivimos bajo un nuevo lema creado de una frase muy popular en nuestro pais, «hay que joderse» y venga, somos gente orgullosa de nuestras tradiciones.

Aquí estoy, pensando en un dibujo, si, porque los dibujos comienzan en la cabeza, dan vueltas y más vueltas y luego comienzan a exigir que se les ponga sobre un papel o un lienzo. Yo creo en el poder de la línea negra en el dibujo. Reconozco que grandes dibujantes e ilustradores se alejan un poco de ella para crear una línea tímida, reflectiva, casi hasta cariñosa, y les queda todo muy bien, hasta elegante, diría yo, pero para mi la maxima expresión en el dibujo la hace la línea negra, solida, firme y fuerte…

Here I am thinking about a drawing. Yes, because drawings begin in the head. They roam around in there for a while until they demand to be put on paper or canvas. I believe in the power of the black line. I know that many great draughtsmen and illustrators have shied away from her (the black line) and have even created using a rather timid, reflective, well, almost loving thin line and they’ve produced wonderful art, even elegant art, I would say. But for me the maximum expression in a drawing is provided by the black line, solid, firm and strong…
