Este es el movimiento artístico que muchos dicen que abrió el camino hacia las tantas vanguardias que surgieron en el Siglo XX. Para muchos es el estilo que mas les gusta, que prefieren. Cierto que hubieron muchos grandes pintores que fueron impresionistas. Hay que conocer este movimiento bien.

This is the art movement that many say opened the way for all the many vanguards that surged in the XX Century. For many it is the style they like the best, the one they prefer. The truth is that many great painters did impressionist work. We have to get to know this movement well.

Esta pregunta me la han hecho mucha gente, amigos, periodistas, y hasta desconocidos con quienes he charlado momentáneamente en eventos o en los vernissage. La respuesta siempre es la misma: Hago arte, o sea pinto, porque soy poeta. Entonces me miran con la cara abobada y preguntan que tiene que ver la poesía con el arte. Tambien siempre contesto lo mismo, que el arte, un cuadro, una pintura o un dibujo, es un poema hecho con pinceles y con carboncillo, que un cuadro habla y cuenta de la filosofía que le ha infusionado el artista, para que, igual que una infusion, la intención se mezcle con las «hierbas aromáticas» que son los colores para que la pintura adquiera el aroma de la creatividad artística.

A lot of people have asked me this question, from friends to journalists to strangers that I may chat with at events or at a vernissage. The answer I give them is always the same: I make art, in other words, I paint because I am a poet. Then they look at me with a stunned look and ask me what does poetry have to do with painting? Again I reply the same thing, that art, a painting, or a drawing, is a poem made with brushes and graphite. That a painting speaks and tells of the philosophy that has been infused into it by the artist. And like an infusion, a painting’s intention mixes with the «aromatic herbs», which are the colours so that the painting acquires the aroma of an artistic creation.

Pertenece a The Gemini Collective junto a ilustradores, otros fotografos y la psicologa Laura-Joy Boulos. Myriam colabora con la revista feminista Al Hayya, editada en Beirut. Hay que conocerla.

I don’t know why no one told me about this wonderful photographer. Myriam Boulos, Lebanese, was born in 1992 in Beirut. Her photography has appeared in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. She forms part of the Gemini Collective among illustrators, other photographers and the psychologist Laura-Joy Boulos. She is a collaborator with the Beirut based feminist magazine Al Hayya. We have to get to know her.

Artista conceptual cubana comprometida con el arte, con el desarrollo del mismo, con la libertad, con el feminismo y con la vida… Nació en La Habana en 1948. Emigró a Estados Unidos para salvarse de vivir bajo la dictadura de Fidel Castro. A través del programa «Pedro Pan» (para salvar a los menores de edad del comunismo) Ana llegó al estado de Iowa en EEUU en 1960. En 1966 se pudo reunir otra vez con su madre y el 1979 con su padre que había sido encarcelado en Cuba comunista por haber sido parte de la Brigada 2506 que hizo un intento por liberar a Cuba de la tiranía de los hermanos Castro. Mendieta estudió arte en la University of Iowa, y sus obras se centraban en los hechos violentos que sufrían las mujeres. Se interesó, además, por la espiritualidad, la religion y por rituales primitivos. Después del post-grado se mudó a Nueva York. Su obra se centraba en el feminismo, en la violencia contra las mujeres y en el hecho de tener que vivir separada de su tierra por culpa de los comunistas. Ana Mendieta usaba la tierra misma para crear. Os urjo que busquéis mas sobre esta impresionante artista que murió joven, trágicamente y misteriosamente el 8 de septiembre de 1985 en Nueva York. Mendieta calló de una ventana en el piso 34 de un edificio en Greenwich Village (Manhattan), situado en el numero 300 de Mercer Street. Allí vivía con su esposo, el también artista Carl Andre, que fue quien pudo haberla lanzado por la ventana pues poco antes de caer los vecinos la oyeron gritar ¡No! Pero Carl Andre quedó absuelto ya que no hubieron testigos, aunque a Andre se le vieron varias rasguñas en la cara.

THE WOMAN AND THE MYSTERY
This Cuban conceptual artist was committed to art, to its development, to freedom and with feminism, throughout her short life… She was born in La Habana in 1948. She emigrated to the US to save herself from living under the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. She came to the US, in 1960, via a special programme for minors called «Pedro Pan»* and was sent to live in Iowa. In 1966 she was reunited with her mother and in 1979 with her father who had been held prisoner in Cuba for being part of the Brigada 2506 who spearheaded an invasion to rid Cuba of the brothers Castro. Mendieta studied art at the University of Iowa. Her work centred on violence done to women. She also became interested in spirituality, religion and in primitive rituals. After graduate school she relocated to New York. The body of her work dealt with feminism, violence against women and in the suffering of those who are forced to live away from their native soil because of communism. Ana Mendieta therefore used soil itself to create art. I urge you to look for more about this impressive woman artist who died young and tragically (and mysteriously) on the 8th of September, 1985 in New York. Mendieta fell out of the window of her 34th floor flat in Greenwich Village (Manhattan) whose address was 300 Mercer Street. She lived there with her artist husband Carl Andre, who might have been the one to throw her out the window as seconds before she fell neighbours heard her shout «No!» But Carl Andre was acquitted as there were no witnesses, although his face was quite scratched up at the time.

This is a series of morphing images that I created a few years ago in Miami and which is part of my «Art Digital» inventory. The song «In My Country» was from a musical which I did in Miami with my then group «Simon» titled «El Bolerista» («The Bolero Singer»).

No conocía mucho de esta mujer que ejerció su arte en Cuba y fue parte de la generación de los vanguardistas. Nació en 1896 en la provincia (tradicional*) de Las Villas, y murió en 1968 en La Habana. Comenzó a los 20 años en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, «San Alejandro» y recibe su diploma en 1924. En 1927 se traslada a Francia y hace muchas cortas visitas a España y a Italia. Regresó a Cuba en 1934 y lamentablemente tubo que vivir bajo la represión del sistema usurpador que desgobierna a Cuba hasta su muerte.

I did not really know much about this woman artist from Cuba that was part of the avant-guarde generation of artists. She was born in 1896 in the province (traditional*) of Las Villas and died in La Habana in 1968. At the age of 20 years she enrolled at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes «San Alejandro» and graduated in 1924. In 1927 she moved to France but made many short trips to Spain and Italy. She returned to Cuba in 1934 and lamentably she had to live under the repression of the usurper government that mal-governs Cuba until her death.
Uno de los grandes guitarristas (yo diría del rock y jazz también) y esta es una de sus canciones mas famosas donde se destaca con un solo de puta madre. Lamentablemente hemos perdido a otro más de los grandes del rock. Jeff Beck, muerto a los 78 años. Que en paz descanse y que se una allá arriba con los demás que lo esperan para formar una descarga como jamás pudo ser aquí en la tierra. La canción se llama «Freeway Jam» y fue un hit, lanzada en 1975.

One of the great guitarists (I would say of rock and of jazz) and this is one of his most famous songs, mainly because his lead is something to get hung about. Lamentably we’ve lost another one of the great rock stars, Jeff Beck, dead at 78. May he rest in peace and may he join the others up there and form a jam session like nothing that could have been done on earth. The song «Freeway Jam» was a hit and was released in 1975.
