Del album Aftermath de 1966. Una de mis favoritas de esta banda que comparte con The Beatles un puesto privilegiado en mi lista de bandas favoritas. Fue una de las primeras canciones rock…después de «Norwegian Wood» de The Beatles…en utilizar el sitar, que lo toco Brian Jones, el multi-instrumentalista del grupo. Los chicos la tocaron durante su gira de 1966 y luego no la han vuelto a tocar en ningún otro lado.

From the album Aftermath released in 1966 and one of my faves from these lads who share a special, and privileged place, in my list of favourite bands. This was one of the first rock songs…after «Norwegian Wood» by The Beatles…to use a sitar, this time played by Brian Jones, the group’s multi-instrumentalist. The Stones played this song during their 1966 tour and then never again have they played it anywhere.
Estilos… Hay mucha preocupación por ahi por los estilos de arte… muchos que quieren buscarse su propio camino en las artes se imaginan desarrollando o siguiendo un estilo y trabajan para ello. Pero os digo que el estilo no es nada mas que la repetición. Si yo repito y repito la misma cosa, o algo muy parecido, habré desarrollado un estilo propio. Veis… Lo único que necesitas es eso. Por eso yo no soy de los que se enamora de un estilo. Me adhiero solo a las definiciones a grosso modo, como arte figurativa o arte abstracta. Esos son los únicos dos estilos que importan. Y hay que acordarse que la abstracción no lleva figuración alguna, si llevase ya deja de ser abstracción y se convierte en figuración.

Styles… I hear a lot about styles, almost anxiety… Many emerging artists want to develop their own style or faithfully follow one. That’s what they are working towards. But I tell you that style is nothing more than repetition. If one repeats the same…or very similar…thing over and over again, one has developed a style. You see, that is all you need do. That is why I do not fall in love with a style. I stick to the big definitions, like figurative art or abstract art. Those are the only styles that matter. And one must remember that abstract art cannot have any figurative elements present. If it should, it will no longer be abstract art, but figurative.

Nació en el antiguo imperio ruso en un lugar que ahora es Bielorrusia en 1887. Este artista judío, cuyo nombre era Moshe Shagal, lo clasifican…o lo consideran…un modernista, pero os digo que hizo de todo. Primero, sus cuadros abarcan muchísimos estilos artísticos y también géneros. No solo se adentró en la pintura, pero también el dibujo, hizo ilustraciones para libros, vitrales, escenarios teatrales, tapices y laminas.
Os digo además que Chagall creció en un hogar gobernado estrictamente por el judaísmo jasídico que prohíbe la representación de las criaturas de Dios y cuando pintó lo que pintaba lo rechazaron completamente y le respondieron con gran ira.
A la edad de 24 años se mudó a Francia y compartió con otros artistas como Robert Delaunay y Fernand Léger. Vivió después en Nueva York, pero jamás aprendió a hablar ingles, quizá porque no le gustaba esa ciudad…

He was born in the old Russian Empire in what is today Belarus in 1887. This Jewish artist, whose birthname was Moshe Shagal, is classified, or considered a modernist, but I tell you he did everything. First of all, he painted in all different styles and genres. And not only did he especialise in paintings, he did drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, theatre sets, tapestry and fine art prints.
I’ll also tell you that he grew up in a strict Hassidic home where depictions of God’s creatures were prohibited. When he showed his family what he painted he was met with their anger and disapproval.
He moved to France when he was 24 and shared life with such other artists as Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. Later he lived in New York, but he refused to ever learn the English language. Maybe he just didn’t like living there…
I urge you to look further at the works of this great artist.
