My skin absorbs the dust of frozen centuries,

the dust remains like footprints in the sand,

and I stand frozen like a marbled drop of yellow rain.

“TEMPLES” is a poem in what I have termed the Euro-Ku.  This style borrows the name and part of the idea that gave form to the traditional Japanese Haiku.  However, I have changed most of the rules that govern the composition of that well known form. In the Euro-Ku the verses…they are still only three…do not have to have the same syllable count as in the Haiku.  The three verses should flow into each other in a coherent and obvious fashion and should be written in the contemporary vernacular, as if one were writing the lyrics of a pop song.  The meaning and the message should be intended for the proletariat; clearly understood by all.  It should not be hidden within confusing and archaic…researched…words.

Of course the original was released by Traffic in 1968, both in the UK and in the US and it failed miserably in both countries. Then Joe Cocker…the Man!…recorded in 1969, changed the name to «Feeling Alright», added some conga drums and, as Lou Reed would put it, three coloured girls from Motown and transformed the song into a rock classic!

* Esta forma de expresar pensamientos, emociones o tonterías la llamo “Haikú europeo” porque aunque consta con los tres versos dinámicos e históricos del Haiku japonés, no se escribe con mente oriental, sino con el pensamiento, agudo y frito de un ser de occidente. Su regla principal es la paranoia y su regla insignificante es la auto-crítica. Ahora ¡a escribir!

Hours filled with thoughts roll before me…

I’m dreaming of travelling north,

as I watch silver trains roll on by me,

floating like ghostly grey smoke.

The city surrounds me like flowers,

that brighten my eyes as I dance,

trying to provoke me and keep me,

in the street where my hope is my chance.

So I sit and I think and I dream

and I seem to float in the smoke

and run through wind

and my thoughts roll before me,

as the hours fill my mind…

Her name was Helena and she was married to the French poet Paul Éluard and was his muse.

Pero el destino, en el año 1929, la llevó a conocer a Salvador Dalí…

Then destiny, in 1929, led her to meet Salvador Dalí…

Este capitulo corresponde a una sección especial en nuestro viaje a través de la historia del arte. Ojala que esto os motive a buscar más y a desarrollar más la idea de que la historia del arte es un continuum. No es que los artistas sean ahora mejores, ni que hayan ido mejorando, es que fueron rompiendo los esquemas, saltándose las reglas y desarrollando nuevas maneras para expresar sus inquietudes. La evolución no implica resolución sino búsqueda.

This chapter corresponds to a special edition in our voyage through Art History. I hope it motivates you to look further and to develop the idea that the history of art is a continuum. It is not to be understood that now artists had gotten better or that there were better artists. It is that artists were now breaking the rules, creating new ways and forms to express their artistic concerns. Evolution does not imply resolution, instead a search.

Ya hemos de entrar de lleno en el S. XX y en sus tantas vanguardias y diferentes tendientes artisticas. Una de las mas famosas y duraderas es el surrealismo y quien mejor para dar ejemplo de sus sutilezas que el artista que proclamó, ante el propio creador del surrealismo, André Breton, que él era el surrealismo, Salvador Dalí.

We are about to fully immerse ourselves in the art of the XX C. and the many vanguards that flourished. One of the most famous ones, which has endured the test of time, is surrealism. Then, who better to give an example of the subtleness of this style than the artist who proclaimed himself…in front of the creator of surrealism, André Breton…to be surrealism, Salvador Dalí.
