Art History: El surrealismo y Dalí – Surrealism and Dalí (español/ingles)

__________________________________________________________________________________

We are about to fully immerse ourselves in the art of the XX C. and the many vanguards that flourished. One of the most famous ones, which has endured the test of time, is surrealism. Then, who better to give an example of the subtleness of this style than the artist who proclaimed himself…in front of the creator of surrealism, André Breton…to be surrealism, Salvador Dalí.

Gracias…

Nothing wrong with calling yourself a genius. No one else is going to do it for you. And if you say it often enough, some will inevitably start to believe you. He certainly had genius level talent as an artist, but now I am interested in finding out what kind of writer he was. Thanks for this post, Francisco!

    1. I agree, there’s nothing wrong with calling one’s self a genius, under the right circumstances, and Dali certainly did, announcing quite boldly that he had nothing to do with modesty…I do think he showed signs of being a genius, especially creating his best work of art: «Salvador Dali», the man. Reference Dali as a writer, he was a superb writer, very humorous, very prolific and very imaginative. Thank you Brad, all the best.

wow, he was all that and more and does deserve to call himself a genius. one knows it when one sees it, and all he had to do was to look in the mirror

    1. You are so right Beth! He created a great work of art called Salvador Dali! (of course he could not have done it without Gala, his wife/model/mentor/administrator/adviser/creator)

    1. Definitely for creating the greatest work he and Gala ever created: Dali! He said he wanted to build himself a prison…which he did in Port Lligat…and to make himself a millionaire, which he did as well. A master marketing genius! Cheers my friend and all the best.

Love him or loathe him, you can’t ignore Salvador Dali. I’ve always quite admired his artistic talent, but I’ve never admired him as a person. I’m pleased to see that you included ‘Cristo de San Juan de la Cruz’.

    1. Definitely, I could not leave that painting out. Actually I have been reading two of the books he wrote, which I recomend, one is «Diary of a Genius» and the other is «The Cuckolds of Old Modern Art» (I think those are the titles in English). Dali was an extraordinary man, no doubt, but, although I have developed a strong admiration for his paintings (some of them), I still think he was a much better writer and conceptual artist, him and Gala, they were a team, for sure, she developed as many of Dali’s ideas as did Dali himself. I owe Gala a profound study (and read as well as she was also a great writer) and a video. Cheers my friend and all the best.

Thanks for enlightening me about his books Francesc, and I never realised that his wife Galia was such an influence.

      2. You’re very welcome Malc. Yes, Gala, one can say, made Dalí and at one point he signed the art they produced as “Gala Dalí”. All the best my friend.

Wow this was great. I do like his work a lot actually. I think partially he wanted to shock people and of course he did. He truly must have loved his wife very much. What a beautiful showcase Francis. I loved the photographs of Dali and also enjoyed his work you shared. The music is always lovely and I really enjoyed the ending. Beautiful. 🦋🤗❤️
