Witches. Women who used magic and supernatural powers to do harm to others…or perhaps good, but we’ll never know…are definitely part of art history. Throughout the ages painters have painted them in a million different ways. Here we will explore a few of them, the ones I think are the most interesting. I hope they are to you as well, and please, whether they are or not, let me know what you think in the comments below.
JOHN WILLIAM WATERHOUSE

It is interesting to note the symbols present in this great work. For example the crow…there are several…who represents death; the bullfrog representing love; the serpent biting its tail, the symbol of Ouroboros frequently used in Gnosticism and mysticism. Additionally we see that the witch is not an old, ugly, old woman with a long nose, warts and green teeth. She is young and beautiful…

As I have been saying since the start of this series, well, the start of this blog, women artists are overlooked, underrated, underpaid and not occupying the same amount of spots on the walls of museums all over the world. This has been a trend and it must stop. Furthermore, I have stated that I believe…wholeheartedly and fervently…that art history must be revised, museums must be revised and many mediocre male artists must be removed and their paintings replaced with the paintings of the great women artists that have been purposely and maliciously left in obscurity.
One of these great ones is Dorothea Tanning and here I want to show you one of her most famous paintings so that you can judge for yourself as far as her talent and her surrealist philosophy goes and why I say what I say. The painting is titled Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, (yes, I know, like Mozart’s piece). Painted in 1943, oil on canvas and measuring 161/8″ x 24″ (US inches) and hangs at the Tate Collection, London.

He is an inspiration to many and considered one of the greatest artists in art history. Certainly the greatest of the Dutch Masters. This great painter from Netherlands was born in 1606 and died in 1669. You have to get to know him, no doubt about it…

These are…or were…The Hollies in a pic from 1965. They started in Manchester, England in 1962 and had plenty of hits but their success lasted barely to 1966. They were certainly a major group forming part of the «British Invasion» to the US in the early to mid sixties. Graham Nash was one of their most famous members.
The song «Bus Stop», recorded in May and released in June, 1966, was the hit that in many ways closed the Hollies Golden Era. It was very well received in the UK, the US and Canada, where it reached number one in the charts. It’s a hell of a song and how can we forget the lines that started it off: «Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say please share my umbrella…»

Ok, so Leonardo’s Last Supper is not a painting, it is a fresco, oh well… But here I bring to you some of the most famous paintings in art history that we all should be acquainted with.

Munch is one of my favourite painters and a great master of Expressionism. His painting «The Scream» is one of the most famous paintings in art history.

As we already know women artists have not been given parity with male artists, not throughout art history nor now and it is time that this changes. These are some Latin American women artists that are worth knowing and also highlighting.
