Thursdays Middle of the Week Music

(From Imperial Records – Billboard, page 19, 10 July 1965, Public Domain)

These are…or were…The Hollies in a pic from 1965. They started in Manchester, England in 1962 and had plenty of hits but their success lasted barely to 1966. They were certainly a major group forming part of the «British Invasion» to the US in the early to mid sixties. Graham Nash was one of their most famous members.

The song «Bus Stop», recorded in May and released in June, 1966, was the hit that in many ways closed the Hollies Golden Era. It was very well received in the UK, the US and Canada, where it reached number one in the charts. It’s a hell of a song and how can we forget the lines that started it off: «Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say please share my umbrella…»

So, do you like it?

Cheers…

I can’t remember the name of the song right now but they have a very intoxicating, compelling, hypnotic, and very exciting song about a (belly) dancer that I just love to listen to. Do you know the name of this song?

    1. Hmm… could it be «Long, cool woman in a black dress?»

No, but I’ll find it in the morning…it’s the coolest song and video I think I’ve ever heard/saw. It was very naughty back in their day, but I loved it!

I googled the only line I could remember from the song, found the song and the video. Love listening to it again.

      8. You are the master! Great! I loved that song way back then, but I guess there were too many songs to remember each one of them, so we must rely on each others memories… Cheers Pat!

I will have to say the AI is making Google searches a lot better most of the time. Last year I asked for a tree that grew a green fruit and got the correct answer, Osage Orange.

      10. Please do not mention AI to me, totally against it! Hehehe… no, just kidding, I am just against it when people say that it can create art… but if it becomes a useful «tool» then let it be…

I’m old enough to remember when the only search options were Boolean operators and, or, not. To be able to query in natural language is a real plus. Guess you wouldn’t understand.

For some odd reason, I recall from my infancy the version released by Herman’s Hermits two months after the Hollies release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p77nEpN8kKU

Yeah, Herman’s Hermits were big in the mid-60s with a number of top ten hits; then they dropped off the map — probably too purely pop to establish a long-term cultural presence like the Beatles or the Stones — but still fun to listen to 😉

      2. Oh yes, I remember the Herman Hermits and liked their songs but I never knew that they also had recorded «Bus Stop», thanks for the info. And yes, I remember reading that John Lennon thought Hermans Hermits and Dave Clark Five were the greatest threats to the Beatles success… imagine that!

Funny, isn’t it? From our perspective, it looks so obvious that however much we like Herman’s Hermits and the Dave Clark 5, they were never destined for a place in cultural history like the Beatles.

      4. It certainly did not look like at the time, interesting it is from our perspective.

The Hollies were right up there with the great British groups of the 60s as far as I’m concerned

    1. Yes! They certainly were and a good group they were for sure. Always loved their songs. And Graham Nash went on to be with CSNY continuing his great career…
