Para mi este pintor maldito fue un genio del expresionismo… Y para mi el expresionismo, o sea esa tendencia artística que surgió en Europa central a comienzos del S. XX, es mi forma preferida para expresar el arte que llevo dentro. El artista no pinta lo que ve en el mundo natural, si no lo que siente, lo que intuye, lo que se imagina y lo expresa de una forma bruta, fuerte, con colores agresivos, con trazos largos y sueltos, casi caricaturescos son los cuadros expresionistas y un autentico fenómeno… Lo he pintado, o sea, a mi estilo, el surreal-expresionismo, primero mas o menos a la edad que murió, 28 años, y también como me lo imagino de mayor…

People talk about «inspiration» when they think of the process of creating art. I never think of such a thing. Perspiration is more likely to provide insight and ideas for a work of art than some superstitious belief in muses or such other elements designed to, supposedly, inspire. So I live in a very ancient city, actually it was built in the days of the Roman Empire. Here I find «inspiration» in many things, but mostly the gothic buildings…

Here is just one angle of the Micalet, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Valencia… It is truly amazing and inspiring…

Although I am not a landscape painter, I do learn and find many elements in architecture and in the natural world. Everything comes from the natural world that surrounds us. Even my abstract art takes root there and there hides its references. There is no such thing as an abstract, everything proceeds from something. Earth, life, the Universe, the «everything,» is a product of creativity, it is creation, not evolution. In art there is no such thing as evolution. There is always creation, development and spirit…

Of course, colours are the essence around the black line. They are the expressionists’ expression…

Yet, there is much to be said for these two perfect colours, black and white…

Fue pintora impresionista, escultora, y diseñadora. Esta artista francesa nació en Étampes en 1853. Un hito en su vida, y en su carrera, fue cuando a los 23 años de edad pintó un retrato de la actriz Sarah Bernhardt. Es posible que haya tenido una relación sentimental con la famosa actriz ya que se conocía que era lesbiana. Desde el 1874 comenzó a exponer en el Salón de París. Pintó los murales decorativos de varios ayuntamientos parisienses y también hizo muchas pinturas para otros edificios de París. Abbéma fue una de las artistas cuyas obras fueron expuestas en el Edificio de la Mujer en 1893 para la Exposición Mundial Colombina de Chicago, con el fin de mostrar los aportes de la mujer a la historia. Una de las obras expuestas fue el busto de Sarah Bernhardt. En 1906 la nombraron Caballero de la Orden de la Legión de Honor. Murió en 1927 en París.

She was an Impressionist painter, a sculptor, a designer and as well as a prolific writer. This French artist born in Étampes in 1853. A notable incident in her life occurred when, at the age of 23, she painted a portrait of the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt with whom she might have had a romantic affair. She was known to be a lesbian. In 1874 she began exhibiting at the Salon de Paris. She also painted the decorative murals for several city halls throughout Paris as well as providing paintings for other municipal buildings in the French capital. Abbéma was one of the artists chosen exhibit at the 1893 Women’s Building of the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a hall dedicated to exemplifying women’s contribution to history. One of the items she exhibited was a bust of Sarah Bernhardt. In 1906 she was named Chevalier of the Order of the Légion d’honneur. Louise Abbéma died in Paris in 1927.
