#artvideo, Goya: «Las pinturas negras» – Goya: «The Black Paintings»

Extremely interesting and you have to get to know them. They are an integral part of art history and of the history of this great Spanish (Aragonese) painter. It could almost be said that Goya was the first truly modern artist. In any event, this video will explain it all to you.

#art, «Et in Arcadia Ego»

(De/By Nicolas Poussin – Foto/Photo Dominio publico/Public Domain)

This beautiful masterpiece, «Et in Arcadia Ego: Les Bergers d’Arcadie,» by the French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin, (Normandy, 1594- Rome 1665), painted circa 1630, hangs in the Louvre museum. It not only demonstrates the artists’ mastery of technique and knowledge of art history, but it seems to hide certain mysteries. One can say that all of it is due to the cryptic inscription on the tomb: «Et in Arcadia ego.»

The Latin phrase can be interpreted as meaning «Even in Arcadia I am.» Arcadia refers to the idyllic, to the pastoral. But it was an ancient Greek province in the Peloponnesus, idealised for its peaceful nature and beloved for its tranquillity. This was the domain of Pan, god of the woods and of the nymphs. It has been speculated that it proclaims that even in such a place as Arcadia, death lurks, perhaps hidden. This became «truth» thanks to Poussin’s biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori, who stated that «ego» referred to death and that death «is» even in utopias like Arcadia.

But it is also possible that the phrase is indicative and pertains to whoever lies in the tomb. Or maybe that Poussin, without intending to warn about the inevitability of death, wanted simply to reminisce, giving such reminiscence a memorable phrase. In other words a nod to nostalgia. I don’t know. However, the authors of the book «The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail» (1982), thought that Poussin was a member of a secret organization called the Priory of Sion, and that this painting held secrets of great esoteric significance. But they do not go beyond that.

I truly wouldn’t even venture a guess. But in a small valley in the land of the language of geese, in the south of France, a lonely tomb like this was found. The same landscape that Poussin painted centuries before. Lamentably it no longer exists in those lands.

Below is the 18th Century «Shepherd’s Monument» in Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire, England. It bears a mirror image of Poussin’s painting, with a few added features. The bas relief has a second sarcophagus placed on top of the one in the painting and beneath a stone bearing the following inscription: O U O S V A V V, between the letters D M beneath them. No one so far has been able to crack what the letters mean. Theories abound…

A mí sino fiel seré
Qué veneno fue
El corazón que a Triana va
Nunca volverá
Sevilla
Con que pasión te enamorará
Y te embrujará
Sevilla
Sola queda Soledad
La guitarra llorará
Sortilegio sobre ti caerá
Y una lagrima
Un perfume flor de azahar
A la hora de la verdad
Pulso infame temblará
Pero matará
Y al alba blanca le contaré
Lo que yo te amé
Sevilla
Bandido ay muero yo por ti
Tu paloma fui
Sevilla
Cantaré
Y enloqueceré
Sentiré
Puñales de placer
El corazón que a Triana va
Nunca volverá
Sevilla
Con que pasión te enamorará
Y te embrujará
Sevilla
Y al alba blanca le contaré
Lo que yo te ame
Sevilla
Bandido ay muero yo por ti
Tu paloma fui
Sevilla
Y al alba blanca le contaré
Lo que yo te amé
Sevilla
Bandido ay muero yo por ti
Tu paloma fui
Sevilla
De oro y diamantes te cubriré
Te seduciré
Sevilla
Como a una reina te trataré
Y te adoraré
Sevilla, Sevilla

#music, A Song for Thursday, Middle of the Week…

(Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East 1971 – Photo Pitchfork)

Only one of the greatest Country-Rock-Blues bands to come out of the Southern United States, The Allman Brothers Band, originally headed by the brothers Duane and Gregg Allman. May they both rest in peace with my appreciation for their great music. And «Statesboro Blues» is one of my favourites. Here it is from their concert in New York City. I had the opportunity to see them twice in Miami. All I can say is that they were both great concerts at the Miami Jai-Alai Fronton, filled with sweet smoke and great music.

(Duane Allman* 1946-1971 Photo Born to Listen)

«Statesboro Blues» was written by Blind Willie McTell in 1928, referencing the town of Statesboro, Georgia. It was covered by Taj Mahal in 1968. It is listed as one of the great guitar songs and as well in 2005, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution placed «Statesboro Blues» as number 57 on their list of «100 Songs of the South.»

What do you think?
