Well, I am really not going to elaborate too much on this. I am referring to the statue of Sharira in Barranquilla, Colombia. It’s over 6 metres high. Is this public art, or what is this?
Shakira, the 46 year old Colombian singer who lives in Miami, who was sentenced in Spain for tax evasion, who was married to Gerard Piqué, who started her career in 1991, whose first great success was with the album Pies descalzos, and who from there went on to become the Latin artist with more awards, whose father is North American of Lebanese origin and whose mother is Colombian with Catalan and Italian ancestry, Shakira, whose name means “grateful” in Arabic, had the greatest collaborative triumph of her career in 2023 with her collaboration with Bizarrap (Argentinian rapper) that won her 4 Guinness world records. The song alluded to her breakup with Piqué.

Well, here is the statue of this phenomenal singer, composer, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. It stands in her birthplace of Barranquilla, Colombia. The statue is made of bronze and aluminium and measures 6,5 metres. It is situated on the shores of the Magdalena River in the Malecón del Río Park. On the base it has this inscription:
“Hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, and a voice that moves the masses”
The singer was not there for the unveiling but was represented by her parents. The unveiling took place on the 26th of December (2023). The sculptor was Yino Márquez, a local artist from Barranquilla. He was assisted by students and alumni from the Escuela Distral de Artes.

I’ve always thought that the most beautiful form of artistic expression was the song, and there are some phenomenal examples throughout history. But one that has always stuck in my mind as having some of the most meaningful lyrics is one that Linda Creed wrote and which Michael Masser put music to, «The Greatest Love of All«. Personally I prefer the 1977 George Benson version, but if you like Whitney, go for hers…
Here are what I consider to be some of the most beautiful intentions included in those lyrics…

I don’t think that parents are really doing that in more, at least not in a grand scale. If children had a sense of pride they would not be joining gangs, committing petty crimes, bullying, smoking, vaping, doing drugs, engaging in hazardous and dangerous activities. A sense of pride prevents those ill had and self-destructive patterns of behaviour.
And what is the beauty they possess inside? Have parents forgotten the delight of children to let loose the reigns of their imaginations and play? Yes, because no one plays anymore. They play videogames and other online activities, alone, in their rooms. Through their imagination children learn, strengthen the synapses and develop abstract thinking, creativity, awareness and most importantly they learn to see the beauty that is inherent in each other and instinctively respect it. But if it is not nurtured, it is as if it had never been there.
The song goes on, it is a masterpiece for sure. I encourage you to listen and to let your heart feel, think and absorb the message. And yes, we do think with the heart. «Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be.2
It can be a smashing good way to start a new year, no?

Ha llegado el dia primero y ya todo nos parece nuevo. Pero el recuento de los días, digamos los almanaques, han cambiado varias veces a través de los años. Tuvimos el almanaque chino, maya, hebreo, persa, islámico, Gregoriano, Justiniano, y hasta la leyenda del tiempo fantasma. Bueno todo esto me indica que el contar los días, semanas, meses y años es todo una construcción arbitraria hecha para facilitarle la vida a alguien, pero bueno. Así contamos los años y lo seguiremos haciendo seculum seculorum.
Hay gente que se queja del año viejo y se alegran por verlo pasar. Esta bien, buenas razones tendrán para ello. Otros se entusiasman por celebrar la Nochevieja con amigos parientes y otros por ahí piensan que el año venidero va ser su año, que en el si que se van a destacar, van a ganar un pastón y además adquirir gran fama. Quizá…
Yo, por mi parte, no le quito la illusion a nadie. Lo mío es lo mío, pero se compartir y si hay que celebrar, pues venga, ¡Fiesta! Pero aparte de todo sigo como una locomotora sobre las líneas de un ferrocarril…que espero que sea largo…que no se detiene. Ha cruzado montes, valles, montañas, ríos y hasta un gran mar, adquiere experiencia, y va siempre tratando de compartir sus miguitas de sabiduría. Voy con un ojo critico y despierto fijándome bien en los que están a los lados de las líneas del ferrocarril y les sonrió, y elevo mi espíritu a Dios, lo alabo y le doy gracias. Estoy satisfecho…
Doy gracias no solo por las grandes cosas que he logrado en el año que se «marcha», pero por los que las han logrado conmigo. Por mis buenos amigos, por la buena gente que Dios ha puesto en mi camino y por mi mujer que es el factor catalizador de mi vida. Yo no hago resoluciones, yo simplemente trato de seguir logrando, aprendiendo y buscando la oportunidad de compartir amor, conocimientos y amistad no importa el año que sea.
Pero bueno, si tengo que hacer una resolución, haría esta. En el 2024 voy abrir un gimnasio llamado «RESOLUCIONES?». Funcionara las primeras dos semanas del año como gimnasio y luego el resto del año será un bar. ¿Te apuntas?

There are many more and I would suggest, if you are interested, you look for them. I understand that at auction they have gained much value now that he is king. Reference the quality, not bad. They look like watercolour. Reference the theme, topic and composition, not as good. The usual bucolic painting of a castle, trees, mountains and nothing more.

COLLEAGUES
I ask my colleagues of art, of painting and sculpture, How can I express art so the message persists, through this thick coat of paint, or this bronze or this marble, so it reaches quite clearly to the minds of the swifts?
And I turn now to you, fellow poets and writers, how can I express gentle moments I fear, with a metaphor? A simile? Or with just a few pronouns, so it reaches quite swiftly to the minds and the ears?
How do I find tenses, and genders, and adverbs, the notes or the lines that can penetrate souls, and deliver my well born and deep felt impressions, yes, how can I do this and not lose control?
I know in my heart that the answer is hiding, within a dream that I dreamt while I napped yesterday, but I cannot recall, the image eludes me, so I’ll just keep on painting and ranting and writing…

En 2007 se presentó la primera exposición de sus cuadros titulada The Drawn Blank Series en Alemania. Pero antes, en 1994, Random House había publicado un libro de sus dibujos titulado Drawn Blank. Luego en 2010 y 2011 se exhibieron sus obras en la Galería Nacional de Dinamarca, exposición de pinturas acrílicas titulada The Brazil Series.
Su exposición Revisionist Art fue presentada en 2012 en la Galería Gagosian (con sedes en EEUU, Londres, Suiza, Roma, Atenas, y París)… En 2013 en el Palacio Real de Milán expuso The New Orleans Series… Tambien en 2013 en la National Portrait Gallery de Londres y en la Galería Halcyon con su exposición llamada Mood Swings que incluía siete puertas de hierro creadas por el cantante/pintor.
En 2023, la exposición Bob Dylan Retrospectrum llegó al MAXXI Museo Nacional de las Artes del Siglo XXI (Roma). La misma ya había pasado por el Modern Art Museum (MAM) de Shanghái y el Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum de Miami. Retrospectrum es patrocinada (en Italia) por Ferrovie dello Stato y UniCredit y contiene más de 100 obras: pinturas, acuarelas, dibujos en tinta y grafito, esculturas en metal y material de vídeo. Son la muestra de los más de 50 años que lleva Bob Dylan en la búsqueda artística.
Venga, os he dado muchos datos y mucha información de donde y cuando. Sin dudas la trayectoria de exposiciones es extraordinaria, pero ahora os pregunto, ¿Si no hubieran sido pintados por Bob Dylan, hubieran sido expuestos estos cuadros en sendos lugares tan importantes y exclusivos? En mi opinion… Vale, no digo que estén mal pintadas, pero me parecen ejercicios de primer año de pintura. No encuentro el dialogo, la filosofía, la conexión ni la búsqueda por comunicar en estos cuadros. Quizá en algunos de los otros estén todas estas cosas que yo le pido a un cuadro para que realmente me impresione. Así que os invito a profundizar en su pintura, y si no queréis perder el tiempo y si aprender, buscad mejor la pintura de otro que os pueda enseñar algo útil.
Y para que no terminemos en una nota disonante ni en la escala menor, mejor disfrutemos de su música. Aquí uno de mis discos favoritos de Bob Dylan…
Bueno, de esto no voy a hablar mucho. Se trata de la nueva estatua de Shakira en Barranquilla, Colombia que mide más de 6 metros… ¿Arte público o que es esto?
Shakira, cantante colombiana de 46 años que vive en Miami, que fue sentenciada en España por impago de impuestos, que estuvo casada con Gerard Piqué, que comenzó su carrera en 1991, que tuvo su primer gran éxito con su álbum Pies descalzos, que desde esos comienzos siguió hasta convertirse en la artista latina con mas premios ganados, que proviene de padre norteamericano con ascendencia libanesa y de madre colombiana con ascendencia italiana y catalana, y que su nombre significa «agradecida» en árabe, tuvo la colaboración más exitosa de su carrera en 2023 con el rapero argentino Bizarrap que le valió 4 récords Guinness porque hizo alusión a su ruptura con Piqué.
Bueno, ahora la estatua de esta fenomenal cantante, compositora, actriz, empresaria y filantrópica que han colocado en su Barranquilla natal…

La estatua es de bronce y aluminio, mide 6,5 metros y esta situada a la orilla del Río Magdalena en el parque Malecón del Río. En la base de la estatua dice esto:
«Unas caderas que no mienten, un talento inigualable, una voz que mueve masas»
Los padres de la cantante la representaron en la inauguración de la estatua que fue el pasado 26 de diciembre.
La obra fue elaborada por el artista barranquillero Yino Márquez ayudado por estudiantes de la Escuela Distrital de Artes.

LA MUERTE Y LA DONCELLA (Francisco Bravo Cabrera, Valencia)
Hace unos días tuve la grata experiencia de presenciar, en el Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias “González Martí” de Valencia, al Cuarteto Koré. Son cuatro excelentes músicas que forman una camerata dedicada a hacer valorar a la mujer en la música, específicamente la música clásica. No solo a las compositoras, (que poco caso se les ha hecho a través de la historia de la música clásica), pero igualmente a las musas, como veremos.
La programación que escuché, que forma parte del ciclo MusaE (Música en los museos Estatales) en su séptima edición, fue coordinada por Juventudes Musicales de España y cofinanciado por el Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte y Acción Cultural Española. Las chicas nos deleitaron con dos piezas, que interpretaron genialmente y que yo considero de mi gran agrado.
La primera fue de Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847), compositora alemana y pianista del romanticismo temprano. Fanny escribió piezas para tríos con piano igual que para cuartetos, además de una obertura para orquesta, cuatro cantatas y más de 125 piezas para pianoforte y 250 lieder. Por supuesto ninguna se publicó en vida de la artista y rara fueron las veces que se presentó a tocar fuera del ámbito familiar, aunque era una excelente pianista.
Pero bueno, anoche las chicas del Cuarteto Koré rescataron un poco la memoria de esta compositora, que dicho sea de paso era la hermana mayor de Félix Mendelssohn. Apuesto que a ese si lo conocíais. Este fue el repertorio:
FANNY MENDELSSOHN (1805-1847), Cuarteto de cuerdas en mi bemol Mayor. I. Adagio ma non troppo II. Allegretto III. Romanze IV. Allegro molto vivace FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797-1828), Cuarteto para cuerda nº 14 en re menor, D. 810 “La muerte y la doncella”. I. Allegro II. Andante con moto III. Scherzo. Allegro molto. Trio IV. Presto
Diría que para mí el recital fue interesante, no solo por el arte del cuarteto, pero también por estas dos cosas en particular. Primero porque en mi blog (www.paintinginvalencia.com) siempre he destacado a las mujeres artistas (pintoras) que la historia del arte ha querido ignorar, y segundo porque tocaron “La muerte y la doncella” que es una de mis piezas preferidas del compositor austriaco Franz Schubert.

En mi vida anterior, allá en Miami, creo que fue en 1995, colaboré con un productor de teatro para poner en escena la obra teatral “La muerte y la doncella” del escritor chileno Ariel Dorfman. Yo me encargue del casting y también de diseñar y pintar el afiche oficial de la obra. Pero debido a mil cosas raras, como la bronca entre la actriz principal y el productor, la bronca entre los músicos (porque iba tener música) y el arreglista, la discordia entre el productor y el dueño del teatro y mi hastió total por tanta mala leche, la producción se fue a bolina y no se llevo a cabo el proyecto.
Pero la experiencia me sirvió para que se me metiera en la cabeza esa música de Schubert, para que conociera el poema “Der Tod und das Mädchen” de Matthias Caludius, (1740-1815 Alemania), que se basa en la mitología griega, específicamente en el rapto de Prosperina, y también para conocer y ver la peli de Roman Polanski «La muerte y la doncella» de 1994.
Pero os recomiendo que si estas chicas, el Cuarteto Koré, se presenta en tu ciudad que no te las pierdas. Tienen una formación profesional excelente y mucha arte. Son: Clara Isabel Gris Sánchez (violín), Àngels Espiell Chaler (violín), Ángela Calero Jiménez (viola) y Julia Elena Núñez Lozano (cello). Se formaron en 2022 en la Fundación Barenboim-Said de Sevilla, que es una fundación pública andaluza que lleva el nombre del pianista y director de orquesta argentino nacionalizado español, israelí y palestino Daniel Barenboim y el crítico cultural palestino Edward Said. La fundación se dedica al desarrollo de proyectos de formación musical en Andalucía y Palestina.
