Kubin, a nightmarish illustrator, but an all around good guy, I think…

#music, A Little bit of Mingus (among us)…

(Photo El Correo)

Charles Mingus was one of the greatest jazz bassists, composers, arrangers and all around magical figure of music: controversial, strange, bizarre, a genius…

He was born in Nogales, Arizona (US) in 1922. I must not forget to say that he was a master of the group improvisation, a super band leader and an author as well… Mingus died in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in 1979 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although unable to play the bass, he did compose and at the time of his death he was working on an album with Joni Mitchell titled Mingus. Joni Mitchell wrote lyrics for his music including his famous «Goodbye Pork Pie Hat«. Some great musicians participated in the recordings, like Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and the bassist Jaco Pastorius.

If you are a Jazz enthusiast (lover) I know you are familiar with Mingus as he is one of the giants of the genre, but if you are just getting into Jazz, I strongly encourage you to listen further to the music of this great man of Jazz.

Cheers…
