Faith saved us from the savages that we were, losing faith makes us savages again

CHEERS

I must confess that I have never been very inspired or motivated by this holiday. It has always seemed to me like a bad example for young children, a complete nonsense for older ones, and somewhat kinki for adults who enjoy dressing up as, well, whatever they so desire. I remember going out with my homemade costumes when I lived in the U.S., risking it by knocking on strange doors demanding trick or treat. Goodness, who knows who could be behind those locked doors in such a dangerous city like Miami… But well, it was Halloween and you had to do what everyone else was doing. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this Halloween to the fullest. But behave yourselves because the next day is the Day of the Faithful Departed, and we must place a flower for them; if not at the grave, at least do it with a kind thought.

Ever heard of Eric Dolphy? Well I am here to tell you a bit about this phenomenal jazz musician who played saxophone and flute. He toured and played extensively here in Europe with the likes of Charles Mingus, for example.
Dolphy had his first big break in 1958 when he started playing with Chico Hamilton’s Quintet. Chico had been drummer for Lena Horne, Gerry Mulligan and Count Basie and later became a band leader.
Eric Dolphy was born in Los Angeles in 1928. Besides being a sideman, he was also a composer and later band leader. He started private music lessons on the clarinet and saxophone at the age of six. He served in the US Armed Forces and in 1952 entered the Navy School of Music.
His death created some confusion. He died in West Berlin at the age of 36, apparently from a diabetic coma which led to insulin shock. Either that or the confusion of the doctors attending to him who thought that him being a jazz musician he was probably on drugs and left him there for the drugs to leave his system, and he instead died. Whichever is the real reason, it was a tragic loss.
But, as it is engraved in his tombstone, «He lives in his music» and I quite agree. Here, take a listen and tell me if you don’t think he is a genius…

ALE…
¿NO TE DAS CUENTA QUE LAS AGUAS SUBEN?
SI NO SABES NADAR VAS A TOCAR FONDO.
OSTIAS…
¿NO SABES QUE EL MAR ES HONDO?
¿NO TE HAS DADO CUENTA QUE AQUÍ TODO ESTA CAMBIANDO?
MIRA, PIENSA, MUÉVETE, QUE LO QUE LLEGA, LLEGA PRONTO –
Y LLEGA EL DÍA DE LA VERDAD…
VAMOS…
JODER…
SI SE PASAN LOS AÑOS HURGANDO EN GRIETAS,
AL RITMO DE LAS NOTAS DISCORDANTES DE TROMPETAS,
(¿Serán las del apocalipsis?)
BUSCANDO LA MANERA DE COLGARTE DE UNA RAMA,
O AMARRARTE CON MEDIAS DE SEDA A LOS POSTES DE LA CAMA.
TE VAN A DAR,
¡VENCIDO!
!NO! ¡VENDIDO!
Y NO PRETENDAS ESTAR MUERTO
QUE ESTAS VIVO…
EL AVESTRUZ ESCONDE LA CABEZA EN LA ARENA,
Y EN EL DÍA DE LA VERDAD LA ESCONDERÁS TU TAMBIÉN,
¿ESO, TÍO, NO TE DA PENA?
TANTA ARENA, TAN POCA CABEZA,
¿NO TE DA VERGÜENZA?

Well, no, I was not born in 1957, but upon researching history I discovered that a lot of interesting things happened that year, especially for me, being a life-long Beatles fan!
Take a look and tell me what you think…

GRACIAS

Lamentably we lost Rebecca last September (2024). She was one of the pioneering women of Performance Art. And although this is a genre that I am not even sure should be included in the Fine Arts, perhaps it should be in the Theatre Department, she did make history and is important as a feminist artist. She specialised in Installations and some of them were quite unique and interesting…

Rebecca Horn was born in Germany in 1944. Rebelling from the wishes of her parents that wanted her to study Economics, Rebecca registered at the Hamburg Fine Arts Academy, (Hochschule für Bildende Künste), where she attended from 1964 to 1970.
The philosophy of her art revolved around the human body, its extensions and its ability to act as a machine. She thought of the body as an object that should be manipulated to find the extent of its possibilities. She accomplished this through her sculpture, video, installations, performance and film. Her search was constant and the object of her search, her art, was the multiplicity (aspects) of the body. Horn always tried to surpass her previous artistic efforts.

Rebecca also loved to draw and made many drawings. Her search also led her to poetry and to the making movies. She lived in Barcelona (1964) and was greatly influenced by the movies of Luis Buñuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Horn went on to direct several movies like: Die Eintänzer (1978), La Ferdinanda: Sonata for a Medici Villa, and Buster’s Bedroom. All her movies seem to flow around her obsession with imperfect bodies and the balance created between the human figure and objects. She collaborated with Jannis Kounellis and as well produced movies, including Buster’s Bedroom (1990) starring Donald Sutherland.
Horn died September 6, 2024 in Bad König, Hesse, Germany. She had retired from public life in 2015 after suffering a stroke. She was 80 years of age.
