  2. If you think of it in terms of a compass, major parties like to portray themselves as poles apart, yet I think in reality, they are perhaps a few degrees apart. As Twain says, we’re essentially voting for the same thing, however we vote.
It always struck me as perverse that, whether we vote one way of another, we are voting *for* the electoral system, for example. So it seems perfectly valid, to me, that someone should choose not to vote at all.

    1. Yes, but reasoning alone does not make the case. If we do not vote, the other side always wins. I do not know the mechanics of it, but it seems that it always turns out that way. And I do agree that in the US the two parties are actually functioning as one. Here in Spain we have many parties, some regional ones but basically we have two main parties, the left-wing Socialist Workers Party (Communist slant nowadays) and the Popular Party (more centrist) but the Catalan separatist parties as well as the Basque separatists also occupy seats in Parliament, so there is more room for (supposed) democratic negotiations, although the left wing ones stick together and we’ve only one real one to the right. All the best Mr. Bump UK

      1. I must admit I was always quite happy with smaller parties, because it means that politicians must work together to get anything done, just like you and I have to. The UK has always been two-party, and they rigged the system accordingly, but both were so poor that voters have turned toward smaller parties, and there are now probably five or six in the mix. But I don’t have a problem with that.
