This beautiful city, surrounded by olive groves and beautiful mountains is a UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity city, but because of its low population, roughly 16.000 souls, it is often thought of as a town. I spent some time there, as did the poet Antonio Machado, and like him, I fell in love with the green fields and the beautiful valley that surrounds the town.

This is such a vivid and heartfelt reflection on a place that clearly holds both beauty and memory.

The way you describe the city—nestled among olive groves and mountains, yet often mistaken for a small town—gives it an intimate, almost poetic character. There’s a quiet charm in that contrast between its UNESCO heritage significance and its modest population, which makes it feel even more special and personal.
