Art History Part VI: Filippo Brunelleschi (Eng/Esp)

(Brunelleschi)

Filippo Brunelleschi (1377–1446)… This Florentine artist, architect and engineer is regarded as one of the key pioneers of the Renaissance. He was trained as a goldsmith… But he revolutionized architecture through his study of classical Roman forms and his development of linear perspective, which is a mathematical system for representing three-dimensional space on a flat surface. He is most famous for the dome of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower of Florence. The dome demonstrated unprecedented technical ingenuity and symbolized a rebirth of ancient knowledge combined with bold innovation… His breakthroughs helped spark a broad cultural transformation, therefore he is though of having «invented» the Renaissance. He reintroducedclassical principles of proportion, harmony, and realism, and influenced artists like Leonardo da Vinci, and laid the groundwork for a new artistic and intellectual movement. His work drifted far and away from medieval traditions and toward a revived interest in humanism, science, and the achievements of antiquity.

Filippo Brunelleschi (1377–1446)…

I can’t imagine what a sight this was to behold in the 15th century! As an artist, do you ever wish you could have lived during the Renaissance?

    1. It must have been fascinating for sure! Actually I would have preferred the turn of the 20th Century Janet. Although the Renaissance was an explosive period, art was still rather constrained and governed by too many norms and conventions…

Interesting times, for sure! As an historical fiction writer, a part of me would have loved to live during the 1700s, but then I think about all the modern conveniences we have today and I know I wouldn’t have had an easy life back then.

      2. That is so true Janet, but I could do without so much digital convenience and control… hehehe…
