This is a deeply thought-provoking and beautifully framed reflection. The questions you raise about art as a spiritual process feel both timeless and profoundly relevant. There’s something very powerful in the way you connect creativity with prayer and meditation—it invites the reader to see art not just as expression, but as a path inward.

I am inclined to think the creative process runs on a spectrum from deeply spiritual to lacking spirituality. This applies to all forms of creative expression. The creative process involves numerous questions one must ask oneself from the moment of conception through to the birth and the development of the piece. What are we observing? What is our response to it? How do we interpret it? And the list goes on. But at its heart is a desire to be both to understand what we observe and make a connection to others, as well as to understand ourselves. The best pieces of art, regardless of the artistic form, take us into the beautiful mystery of life, touch the soul, enliven the spirit, and open our eyes to see. Too much modern and contemporary art is self-centered, self-absorbed, and splashes of paint, discordant notes, &c. The artists pull us into a black hole rather than take us on the ascent of the pilgrimage, say of the Camino de Santiago.
