A SONG FOR HER
Ashes and Echoes
He knows she is gone,
though the world has not noticed.
No sign in the clouds announced her parting.
No wound in the sky,
just the sun, humming a hymn,
indifferent to his pain,
still brightening reality
with abstract light.
A mezzo soprano’s voice,
a remnant from a ghostly choir,
echoes of the Ave Maria through the empty cathedral
while three ancient bells
toll…
The rhythm of sadness.
Perhaps time was never theirs to keep,
only to share for a fleeting instant,
before silence claimed its due.
In Stillness, Remembered
But worlds, in the darkness of space, continue to spin,
not in defiance,
but in rhythm eternal,
composition perfect,
the key and the tempo,
unknown.
Light melts and flows on top of the leaves
of those two trees that once framed her smile,
unaware that it was her smile that made them beautiful.
He no longer searches for meaning.
He listens,
and in the silent pause between two heartbeats,
he hears a note that will not fade,
that will soften his loneliness and erodes his sadness.
He knows you are not here,
and yet,
the air has kept your shape.
Release
The wind moves through his skin like a knife,
or a thought…
No boundary between
what was hers, what was his,
and what remains.
Grief has dulled the serrated edge of clarity,
like the river’s current,
that has softened the jagged edges of its rocks
while it flows seeking its ocean.
He walks on,
not beyond her,
but with her
diffused
into everything that is.
Because he knows that she has gone.

Thank you so much Pat. In this case, this poem I did write for a very good friend of mine who quite recently lost his wife of many, many years…

Thanks, Francisco. It seemed less abstract than some of your other poems.
