#art, Who is Banksy Defending? – ¿A quién defiende Banksy?

(Banksy’s new stencilled wall message/Photo from Daily Telegraph)

So Banksy is defending terrorists now? Incredible the amount of “useful idiots” out there, not only in Venice…

¿Así que ahora Banksy defiende a los terroristas? Es increíble ver a tantos “tontos utilesque surgen por doquier, no sólo los que se han unido en Venecia…

    A sharp and thought-provoking commentary! 👏
You’ve captured the provocative nature of Banksy’s work while also pointing out the controversy and confusion it often stirs. The way you expressed it in both English and Spanish adds even more weight, giving your message wider reach and resonance. Clear, bold, and impactful—well written!

He’s lost all credibility now as far as I’m concerned. He’s become so predictable that he even bores me now. This is no longer the cutting edge thought provoking Banksy that appealed to me, it’s just mindless propaganda.

    1. I hate to say it my friend, but I told you so from the beginning. None of these «artists» that are «champions» of the underdog, or of «just» causes, care anything about the cause. They are in it for the money, the fame and the recognition. Banksy is one of them and that is why I did not like his «business model» from the start. He is a clever businessman that uses art as trade. Now he is supporting a terrorist cause… Anyways, the minute I saw the photos (which is now in all newspapers throughout Europe and probably America) I wanted to know what you thought of his new alliance… Have a great Tuesday my friend.

A bit of info you may or may not be interested in my friend.
You know me well enough to know that I rarely take things at face value, and I never took Banksy at face value either. He likes to have this aura of mystery around him, but there are people who know who he is obviously. Being a fellow Bristolian, I dug a bit deeper years ago, and although there’s no proof, there were rumours that he was a member of the group Massive Attack. Now, I don’t know if you were a fan of Massive Attack or even heard of them, but they were part of the Bristol music scene back in the late 1980s. The suspect was Robert Del Naja who denies that he’s Banksy – but then he would wouldn’t he? Whether he is or not I couldn’t say, but there seems to be a connection between them somewhere.
Bristol played a big part in the Transatlantic slave trade and Massive Attack were instrumental in exposing it to a wider world and embarked on a bit of a crusade. They were supporters of BLM tearing down the Edward Colston Statue, but judging from some of his earlier work, I do believe that Banksy also supported the ‘Free Palestine’ movement, so it’s no surprise to me that his latest ‘artwork’ appeared outside the Royal Courts of Justice.
‘Palestine Action’ have recently been proscribed a terrorist group in the UK and there were 900 arrests in London last weekend alone, but what gets me with Banksy is that his ability to cross boundaries using art seems to be taking him down a rabbit hole. This latest piece seems to be showing punishment being dished out by the judiciary against a pro-Palestine supporter, but at the same time hundreds of people are being arrested in the UK for innocuous comments seriously threatening our freedom of speech. Given the opportunity, I would dearly like to ask him why he thinks supporters of Hamas are more important to him than the freedom of speech in his own country.

      2. Although I had heard of Massive Attack, I don’t know anything about their music (though I’ll have a look), I really do appreciate this background info you’ve proffered. Thank you. And I would like to hear an answer from Banksy, or his followers to your closing question. And a very good question that it is. It seems like pro-Palestine protests are the flavour of the month now and all “activists” must take up the cause and the flag. I would like to know why Palestine (which equals pro Hamas enthusiasts) is so important to them as opposed to other causes, like you mentioned…

I think the easy answer to that Francesc is that it’s more to do with the fact that these protestors are more anti-Israel than pro-Palestine.

      4. Hehehe… of course! They are motivated and guided by those against the state of Israel, which is the only ally and only democratic country in that region.

I would also like to ask Greta a question. Would she prefer to live in Israel or Gaza?

      6. Yeah! Let’s get a bit of honesty from these «activists»! Good one mate.

  3. There is a very lively debate over here about the judiciary being used to enforce political will. I applaud Banksy 100%

    1. Even if he’s defending terrorism?

  4. Terrorism is very subjective. He’s also defending free speech. Our current government has sanctioned its own representatives even, because they dared to dissent from the leader’sline. It’s quite worrying.

    1. One thing is protesting against free speech, another is defending a terrorist organisation like Hamas. Plus Banksy is only in it for the money. That has been his business plan from day one. I don’t trust the sincerity or authenticity of anything he does. But, Mister Bump, I respect your opinion. 😊

  5. Have you seen what it looks like now the authorities have tried to remove the art? Regardless of which perspective someone has on this, by trying to remove it they have amplified whatever message he was trying to make. He has been very clever in making something about the suppression of speech, knowing it was likely they would remove the art.

I must admit, although I have seen some of the stuff Banksy has done, I am not massively familiar with everything he has done as a whole 😊
