#opinion,#art, Dear Diary, page 387: Can One’s Philosophy, Change?

(«Moon Base»/Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

I once said «a painting reflects the artist’s philosophy of life…» but I did not mean that it held even an inch of the artist’s truth, hidden or outwardly visible. A painting is a creation, it is not a document associated with the soul of the artist that painted it. An artist, is a professional that creates a product with every intention of selling it. So yes, art is a product. When an artist works, (paints, sculpts et cetera) he is engaging his acquired knowledge (be it from uni, academies or videos on YouTube) to create a work of art. Art is not a product of inspiration or intuition. A painting created intuitively might be beautiful but it lacks many of the ingredients that artists usually pour into their work…

So, I paint what I see in my mind. Yes, I am fully engaged emotionally and professionally with my paintings. And some do reflect my philosophy of life or of something else. But our philosophies can change. Mine have several times over the years. As one learns more one tends to discard what was once considered knowledge and replace it with new found wisdom. And a new philosophy of life has surfaced.

So I should amend that statement and add to it «at the time when he painted it»…

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with people changing their minds. It’s much better to do that than to stubbornly follow a belief that no longer applies.

Caveat, sounds fair and follows the old saying that as one ages, certain beliefs, hobbies, and actions morph. Not what the actual saying is but an approximation of its point
