Apelles… Ancient Greek artist (370 BC – 306 BC)… He may have been born in the island of Kos… He studied art at the Sicyon Art School… He met Alexander the Great in Macedonia and worked in the Royal Macedonian Court. He travelled with Alexander to Asia. And Apelles was the only one allowed to make portraits of the great conqueror.
Take a look and tell me what you see…

Considering how old it is, it looks surprisingly modern (if the Renaissance can be considered modern vs antiquity). One of the time mind shifts that can be hard to make is the Romans are closer to us in time than they were to building of the Pyramids.

So true Pat… but who knows when the pyramids were really built? I don’t believe “experts” as their explanations always have to fit into the “official” narrative… so much more has been discovered…

Thank you, Francesco, for this interesting introduction to Apelles and his brief history. As I have never heard of him, I am delighted to know about him, courtesy of Prof. Francesco. For all we know, he might have been very talented, but it is a shame that nothing survived for us to admire.

In my college/university days, I was cornered into taking an art/architecture history class. I’d be lying if I said I had much of an aptitude, or interest, in it at the time. Frankly, I was just there to check off a requirement and move on. I’ve learned significantly more, by orders of magnitude, by reading and watching your content than I ever did in the classroom, Francesco. Many thanks!

Far more skillful with a paint brush than the other artists you’ve shown us tonight.

Yes, for sure, however it would have been phenomenal had we actually one of his paintings. Sadly none survived… thank you so much Janet.

There I was thinking how well these paintings looked for their age until you explained that they were reproductions. Even so, he does appear to have been a talented artist. Thanks for the info Francesc as I had never heard of him before.

He’s the father of painting, in a sense, but no one knows what his actual paintings looked like. Always a pleasure my friend. All the best and a grand day to you.
