#art, Art History in One Minute (videos), part 9: Yoko Ono…

(Image: CORDON PRESS/source: El País, Spanish newspaper)

I chose this image because I believe this is how Yoko Ono likes to be seen and remembered because without John Lennon she would have been nothing, although she still would have been quite rich… This is a scene typical of their hypocritical position on things. They are doing a «bed-in for peace» and for the end of the Vietnam War, and where do they do it? At the Amsterdam Hilton! What you do not see in the photograph are the teams of maids and of food and drink deliveries to their «bed-in». How wonderful it is to be rich and famous and still think of oneself as an «activist» for peace…

In any event I am doing this entry into the series «Art History in One Minute (videos)» because, although in my opinion, Yoko Ono is no artist (unless making tons of money is an art), but since she has been exhibited at the MoMA and at the Guggenheim and a lot of other places, she is regarded as an artist. She’s a conceptual artist. To me she is nothing but a rich woman who knows that with a lot of money you can do, and be, whatever you want. If she is an artist, then she is the worst one I can ever imagine…

  2. No she is not, did you see the clip that John and Chuck Berry sing a song? than she starts to scream in the mic, and Chuck cuts her mike hahaha , the look at Chuck face when she opens her mouth is verry funny

    1. I saw that! And a chapó to Chuck for that gesture that I am sure everybody in the audience appreciated! Hehehe…

  3. To an extent we are all hypocrites. How many people who profess to care about the climate are happy to fly halfway around the world and back for their summer vacation?
I think they lived in a time of some very specific issues and they used their greatest asset – their public profile – to fight them. After all, it was American public opinion which eventually ended the Viet Nam war.

      1. I have to agree, though, I never cared for her art. But that is art, isn’t it? Some we like, some we don’t. I remember she was an artist before they met, because they met at one of her exhibitions.

      2. She was rich and able to be an artist when they met. That is true, with lots of money you can imagine yourself an artist. But if she is an artist, in my opinion, she has no talent (lots of money), and has to be one of the worst, if not the worst, artist I’ve ever seen. But artists exist in the minds of us all, just like non-artists…

      3. Haha. But what is a poem? In truth, anybody can write anything, good or bad, and call themselves a poet. I figure it’s the same with art 🤣

As a Beatles fan, I get where you’re coming from, Francisco. John was the soul, and Yoko remains a deeply polarizing figure. But I’ll always respect the message of peace they tried to share, no matter how flawed the delivery. ✌️🎶🕊️

    1. Thank you so much Cindy! I reckon it is a good way to get people, artists and non-artists, to engage with art history but not be overwhelmed. I mean, watching a one minute video cannot bore anyone, right?
