I have often asked, what is art? Why I ask it? Why so many times? I am curious. I learned that when one asks the same question over and over one gets different replies… But, when I ask a question like this I am hoping to get some deep, visceral answers, not the typical ones… So, I ask you, what is art to you? Perhaps that is a better way to ask, as sometimes when you don’t ask the right question you don’t get the right answer, but when you ask it right, then thigs begin to open up… Sometimes I think art is like a bullfighter (very common in my country) approaching the meanest bull. Or it could be the other way around. What do you think?
Here is a little of what art has been to me over the more than thirty years that I have been at it professionally…

We also think it’s good to be asked several times the same question, because the answer to the first question is usually the most conventional one.
So, a work of art is a self-contained form that refers first to itself and then to other works of art. It stands in the history of similar works of art.
As I said, unlike non-art, art is self-referential. Furthermore, the environment in which an artefact appears also influences whether it is art (see Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s tomato soup can). The recipients largely determine whether something is art or not. Their judgement depends on what they have seen before.
Happy weekend

Thank you very much! I also think that art is a business, a profession through the which many of us make our living. We, as artists, are trained and educated and coing work such as would any other professional. However, we must make sure we create in good taste and wok that resonates and if we are lucky we become very famous and make much money. All the best to you!

I guess art it’s like pornography. I can’t define it but, I’ll know it when I see it.

That’s a good analogy… thanks!
