(«YelloAbstrak»/Francisco Bravo Cabrera/Derechos Reservados/All Rights Reserved)

+++

Abstract art is one of the art vanguards of the XXth Century. According to art history, Vassily Kandinsky invented it when he created his 1910 watercolour…

(Kandinsky acuarela abstracta 1910/Abstract Watercolour 1910)

+++++

Now some say that it was not like that, that Hilma af Klint…a woman painter…had already been making abstract paintings, like this one:

(Abstraccion de Hilma af Klint/Abstract by Hilma af Klint)

Simple, ¿No?

+++++++

To be clear, in art there are many different styles, many schools, and many vanguards, but basically there are only two types of art, figurative art and abstract art. How do we know which is which? I’m going to tell you, and it’s simple. If a painting or a drawing contains elements that are easily identified with things/human forms from real life the painting is figurative, no matter how distorted the figures may be, or how surreal, cubist, or expressionist they may be. If it has nothing, no element of real life, and is composed of geometric shapes or colours, etc., the painting is abstract. Simple, right? Come on, don’t get confused because some catalogues even place Picasso as an «abstract artist» and he never painted an abstract in his long, and very fruitful, life.

    1. The greatness of art is its variety. There is something for everyone. Thank you Joanna and all the best.

        Thank you, Francesco, but I prefer talent such as that in the work by Hans Holbein, “ The Ambassadors.” This painting puts the entire Renaissance in a frame. The carefully staged double portrait shows the instruments of science and the accoutrements of art; the fashion and the fruits of the global trade. Alongside the self-confident pose of the men, we have hints of the religious turmoil that would tear their Europe apart – the broken string on the lute, Lutheran hymns resting on an incomplete flute, and the nearly concealed crucifix. Across the bottom of the painting, there is a distorted skull that only takes its proper shape when viewed from a particular angle. The skull implies that whatever happens in the material world, all ends in death. Because of this work’s deep meaning, it is my favourite painting. Of course, I also know who the two men are.

        I rest my case.

      2. No arguments from the defence 😊 That is one of the most phenomenal paintings in art history, no doubt and I greatly admire it. However, I do not like to compare artists who work in different styles. Holbein captured, as you have so well put it, the spirit of his time and painted something quite pertinent to it. A painter today cannot paint something like that as it would not capture the spirit of our times. It would lack power and interest among patrons of the arts. Each era has its art and that does not mean that as eras advance that art has as well. Art does not evolve and I have argued previously. But artists do and they must approach their work according to the spirit of their times. But as far as mastery of technique, colour schemes and composition, the masters of the Renaissance are unmatched. Thank you so much for such an interesting and welcome dissertation of a painting so well loved. All the best Joanna,

        Thank you, Francesco, for your gracious reply! I do understand the point you are making, but I feel that even today I like to see that not in a million years I could paint as the artist’s work in front of me. I have a modest aptitude to draw and paint, which I demonstrated in two of my posts, but I don’t think of myself as an artist, although some of my works were bought by people who think otherwise.

      4. Thank you Joanna. I would love to see you continue drawing and painting. The only way to gain talent is by working and working hard at it. Like they say, practice makes perfect! All the best!

        True, Francesco, but to make it better and better, one needs a talent, not just aptitude. If you have time one day, you can look up two posts – “Nature Inspired Art” and “The Curious Case of Nature Inspired Drawings.” They were published in 2018.

        Thank you, Francesco, for your kind comments. While my work is modest, as I cannot afford old masters even as copies, properly framed, my creations look good on my walls. By the way, they are quite large, almost a meter long/tall.

        Thank you, Francesco! Let me tell you that one of my creations, in an old frame and 3-dimensional, was bought by a scientist in Cambridge, who paid £ 2.000 without me setting the price, he decided that this is what it is worth!

    1. Gracias Azurea20! Feliz viernes y finde.
