#art, Should there be Censorship in Art?

(«Manzana dentro»/Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Should there be censorship in art? Yes. What!!! Let me explain. I think that there should be no censorship in art at all, except when it comes to illegal acts. If your «art» (conceptual art) is beating up an unfortunate in the street to take his money to buy the wine for your gallery’s vernissage, you have not created «art», you have committed aggravated strong-arm robbery and you should go to jail. If you abuse of animals or any other living thing to «create» art, then you have not the right to do so. It should be censored and you should be punished. But anything else, no matter how tasteless it might be, as long as it is legal, should not be censored.

What do you think?

Is showing a nipple (in a painting or in art photography) on Instagram something wrong? Is it immoral? Or if you post your art (nudes) on YouTube, are you offending the general audience? Classical paintings can be shown as they are, but modern ones that I paint, or you? If we post them on social media they get censored! Incredible!

What do you think?

Art can’t be censored! Art is a free field… But you can make this, some of art works (anything in art) can be limited for the age… for example, under 18 or under 15, etc. This is my opinion. Thank you dear Francisco, your drawing/painting is beautiful. Love, nia

I agree with your assessments of what shouldn’t be art, but I will go further to include the graphic nude photos of Maplethorpe, Sally Mann’s nude children in adult provocative poses (not sexual), Joel Peter Witkin who photgraphed Mexican Cartel Corpses..

    1. I agree, it’s in bad taste and made for shock value only. Not art. Thanks Matt.

Art should be censored by the judgement of society, i.e. the masses. As to cruelty or theft, those are punishable in their own right without respect to any any creative process. What we see is an uneducated and perhaps perverted population, incapable of good judgement regarding art or most any other feature of society.

    1. Fully agree. Except for the mention of the “masses” as that’s what the Marxists always refer to. I prefer society, community or simply the people. Thank you Espie for a spot on assessment.

  6. If something is clearly pornographic, maybe it should be censored. After all, we do have laws against such things. I will always vote to protect the children first. And some questionable artists create crap and then demand to be seen. But the public has the last say about what they like and don’t like.

    1. Yes, as I stated, something that is clearly against the law should be not only censored but prosecuted. I am referring to tasteless rubbish that often passes for art. And you are right, the public always has the last word. If one is offended, or does not like something, all one has to do is avoid it. Thank you Dawn!
