I went to their concert in Miami, must have been 1972 or 73. It was a surreal experience in every aspect. They put on a light show that was as incredible as their music. And Palmer’s drum solo, concluding with a resounding gong was beyond phenomenal. I still remember the lights and the music as vivid as if I had seen and heard them yesterday…
Keith Emerson (keyboards, synthesisers) came from the band The Nice, a progressive 60’s band… Greg Lake (bass, guitar, vocals) played with another great British band, King Crimson. They met when both bands played the same show. Before thinking of adding Carl Palmer (drums, percussion), the two lads even tried to get the drummer for Jimmi Hendrix… Happily, Hendrix’s drummer was not interested and they got Carl who had played with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
And so was formed Emerson, Lake & Palmer in London, in 1970. The band sold over 35 million records worldwide and always filled the large concert halls of the time. It could be said that E.L.P paved the way for other progressive rock bands of the era… The band’s history ended in 2016 when Keith Emerson shot himself. His suicide was on 11 MAR and nine months later Greg Lake died of cancer…. As a fan of electronic-progressive rock I had all their albums. But if I were to recommend one to you I would choose the live recording Pictures at an Exhibition from 1971. Phenomenal!

Great band – your post inspired me to write… I was lucky enough to meet Keith a couple of times. The Nice drummer Brian Davison (RIP) was a close friend of mine, we hung out a lot, played and taught music together, laughed, cried, I really miss him.
Late 90’s, Keith, Brian and Lee Jackson (bass player), started to communicate again, years after Keith split the band.
I first met Keith at Brian’s 60th birthday party and I was surprised how down to earth he was. One would expect him to be crazy, wired, full of electricity! But actually, he was gentle, funny and very humble.
Miraculously, The Nice reformed for a small tour in 2002 and I met him after a show. Again, such a lovely guy.
Brian passed away in 2008 and I’m so glad Keith got it together to reform The Nice in time. I know Brian was over the moon when he came back into his life.
As for Keith’s passing too, so incredibly sad.
Incredible musician and I know he inspired so many, after all, it’s stated that The Nice were THE first prog-rock band.

ELP was my first favorite band after ELO as a teen. Just swapped out one letter but a much more original group. Yeah, it was sad when Keith died, and how. And then Greg. I had their best albums (all of them originally, but traded out Love Beach…). I may have played Tarkus the most, but also loved Pictures at an Exhibition, Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy, and the first album. Of note, Carl also played for Atomic Rooster, who are an underrated band. King Crimson with Lake is phenomenal!
