DEACON 11: «A Good Soldier…»

(«Soldier» by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

A good soldier is not an angry man…

It has been said in many ways and attributed to Lao Tzu, author of the Tao Te King (El Dàodé jīng/Chinese: 道德經) and one of the quotes that has always supported my energy, my stamina and drive, and as well peace…

He spoke calmly but powerfully…

Anger clouds the judgement, hardens the heart, dulls the senses, makes one vulnerable, weakens one’s resolve to actually win and ultimately wears down our body. Anger lowers our body’s resistance and negatively influences our immune system. A man who is perpetually angry with the world is a man who does not admire the world around him. He does not show gratitude for the gift of life. And having a «bad temper» is a sign of weakness and of fear, because creating an aura of ill temper this man keeps people away, causing momentary relief but reflecting a personality that suffers from anxiety disorders.

That is why, even in the most violent of professions, that of the soldier, a man has to maintain a sense of calm, of conviction and of duty. A soldier does not go to war because he is angry with the enemy. A soldier goes to war to win the war for his country. A soldier goes to war to fight for his brother standing next to him and to do that he must possess a clear and tranquil mind.

The Holy Bible also addresses anger, and tells us that one should be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. This wise advise was given by Saint James in his epistle (James 1:19). Proverbs (19:11) also tells us that good sense makes one slow to anger. Therefore we should accept the fact that anger is not a positive emotional response and that the impulse to anger should not be filed away so that it can fester inside and cause us debilitating distress, but that it should be channelled towards actions, actions that are neutral, free from anger, free from thoughts of revenge or fear.

A good (fill in the blank) is not an angry man or woman…

PEACE

Amen 🙏🤗 As Christians, we’re called to reflect Christ’s peace and wisdom in all situations. Anger only weakens us, while God’s peace strengthens our hearts and minds. Let us strive for calm and compassion in everything we do. 🙏
