Well I must say I did not know anything about her, but we are learning together so, here it is. She is from the US and associated with feminism and art seems to focus on sex, birth and regeneration. She was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1954 but her family moved to the US in 1955, so she has lived all her life in that country… She lives and works in Manhattan’s Lower East Side… She studied at the Hartford Art School (1974/75)… She moved to NYC and in 1976 joined Collaborative Projects (Colab) an artists group of artists of various disciplines… As of 1988 Kiki began her study of mortality and of the physical human body. Her work is an exploration of human organs, with sculptures of the heart, lungs, stomach, liver and spleen. She also explored bodily fluids with social significance, especially those that were causal factors for diseases such as AIDS, like blood, and women’s rights issues which included urine, menstrual blood, and feces… Smith has created film, sculptures, artists books, tapestries and mosaics… Secretary of State Hillary Clinton awarded Smith the Medal of Arts (2012). Her paintings hang in US consulates in Istanbul and Mumbai.
I hope you enjoy a few of her works…

I loved her papier mâché sculpture of a crouched female, hugging her knees in a self-protective pose. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
