DEACON 11: Love, Life and Wisdom

Ἁγία Σοφία, or Hagia Sophia, is the temple to Holy Wisdom, and one, if not the first cathedral of the Christian world. It was built in Constantinople in AD 537. With this example in mind, we turn our thoughts to the importance of love in our lives.

As we have always been told, «God is Love» and that is true. We have been exploring what love is and we have discovered that love is kind, generous, fruitful and patient. And that love is not rude or self-serving. Love is not jealous, pompous, or envious. And love does not garnish ire or spite.

But Love is also the needful part of our lives so that we can then accomplish the others. As Saint Paul states, that without love there is practically nothing of value in our lives. He tells us that there is no use in «angelic tongues» if there is no love. That the gifts of prophecy and knowledge are nothing without love. That charity gains you nothing if there is no love.

This magnificent church, Saint Sophia, that has now been transformed into a mosque, is a symbol of holy wisdom. It is a place of wonder. I have been there many times. Going there is a pilgrimage for Christians. Once you step into the church you feel the power, the peace and the unity with sacred knowledge.
