#music, Great American Bands, Ch. 18: Dixie Chicks

Apparently they are now called simply «The Chicks»… I prefer The Dixie Chicks much better, but…

The band was formed by Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. And if you didn’t know they are the second all girl band to have sold more records, independent of the musical genre. Since 2006 they have sold over 36 million albums. Impressive…

The girls got together in Dallas, Texas in 1986. They have had big hits throughout the 1990’s like «Wide Open Spaces» and others. Their vibrant energy and virtuosic stage performances with cool solos and instrumental passages have placed them in a superb category.

And one thing that I truly admire about these «chicks» is their stance on political issues. From the time they said they were ashamed that GW Bush (then president of the US) was from Texas. I am sure they are not too happy with what is going on now (2025) in the US. And even though retrograde minds tried to boycott them, they surged right back. Progressives never give up.

Hope you enjoy and tell me what you think. Should they have changed their name?

It truly is a shame that one incident caused such a dramatic shift in their career. They were an incredibly talented trio, and their music resonated with so many people across different genres. Their blend of country, bluegrass, and pop influenced so much of the music scene, and I can’t help but think of all the potential greatness they had yet to share with the world.

The way they handled their political stance was bold and admirable, especially at a time when it was so controversial. They stuck to their principles, and in the end, their resilience paid off. It’s impressive to think about their success, selling over 36 million albums despite the backlash. Their talent and commitment to music should have always been the focus.

As for the name change, I totally understand your preference for The Dixie Chicks. The name was iconic and part of their identity, but it seems they made the choice to adapt to the times and be more inclusive. While the change might feel bittersweet, I think their music continues to stand the test of time no matter what they’re called. The legacy they’ve built with their artistry and passion for music remains untouchable.

It would have been amazing to see what more they could have done together had things unfolded differently.
