#music, Great American Bands, Ch. 18: Dixie Chicks

Apparently they are now called simply «The Chicks»… I prefer The Dixie Chicks much better, but…

The band was formed by Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. And if you didn’t know they are the second all girl band to have sold more records, independent of the musical genre. Since 2006 they have sold over 36 million albums. Impressive…

The girls got together in Dallas, Texas in 1986. They have had big hits throughout the 1990’s like «Wide Open Spaces» and others. Their vibrant energy and virtuosic stage performances with cool solos and instrumental passages have placed them in a superb category.

And one thing that I truly admire about these «chicks» is their stance on political issues. From the time they said they were ashamed that GW Bush (then president of the US) was from Texas. I am sure they are not too happy with what is going on now (2025) in the US. And even though retrograde minds tried to boycott them, they surged right back. Progressives never give up.

Hope you enjoy and tell me what you think. Should they have changed their name?

They were certainly not the only band to change their name. Lady Antebellum became Lady A. This particular song sounds similar to the Stevie Nicks version. They do some amazing songs, Francisco.

    1. Yes they do! And this changing name business… don’t like it. Cheers Pat!

I’d love to to see The Chicks so I could sing “Wide Open Spaces” at the top of my lungs.

I’m liberal but i can’t stand cancel culture. You don’t like a band because of whatever then don’t listen-don’t buy-don’t support. Simple as that. People also had a problem the country trio Lady Antebellum (they changed Antebellum which is associated with slavery to just Lady A). My favorie Dixie Chicks song is Lullaby.
