#art, Art or Rubbish?

(Image Telecinco)

Well, I know what I think this is… empty cans of Belgian beer… Art? Hardly. But «conceptual artists» consider these things as objet trouvé, a type of «art» that they have invented out of ready made things that are found, usually in the rubbish bin, which is where they belong. Well, a guard at a «museum» in The Netherlands, thinking someone had left empty beer cans behind, threw them away… Now, I’ve a few questions to ask of the curator of that museum and the first one is what kind of criteria do they have reference works of art that they exhibit. The second is why would they suppose someone drank two cans of beer within the exhibition halls? What kind of museum is that?

Now the «artist» painted the cans by hand, that is what was said. But, is this what people pay to go see in a museum? The artist, Alexandre Lavet, created the work back in the 1980’s and titled it «All The Good Times We Spent Together» (which can be resumed in two empty beer cans). He claims that the creation of the work took «much time and effort.»

You be the judge, art or rubbish? Or rubbish-art? I know what I think…

I used to volunteer at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. Artists in Resident used to create some original and complex pieces out of driftwood and other pieces of trash retrieved from the park or washed up by the tide. None of it looked like it was picked up out of a recycling can and called art. It reminds me of the empty beer can pyramids that frat guys would create in their dorm rooms. Not exactly cerebral or even the 60s and 70s craft of melting different colored candles over a Lancer or Mateus empty wine bottle to create brightly colored candle Holder.

    1. Absolutely! There is no thought or intention in this “art” and for me it’s worth noting!

I totally agree, especially when it is not transformed into any original or creative–some recycled art really is art.

      2. Yes, you’re right, when it is created by someone with talent and good taste.

It certainly captures the disconnect between the elite art world today and the ignorant masses (in which I hold a proud place) who would rather spend our moments gazing at a Raphael or a Monet than a couple of beer cans in the corner. Kudos to the maintenance staff for inadvertently making a very powerful statement that will resonate with the masses around the world! 🤣

  3. When I was in school one project we had to do was installation/conceptual art. I wanted to do a pile of trash, or something similar, with «waste» as the theme. I was told «good idea, but make it smaller», so I took a bookshelf, filled food containers (bread bags, plastic containers, potato ship bags) with trash and put them on the shelves. I also took photos of canned goods and glued the print outs to the back. The idea was to make it look like a grocery store shelf, selling a bunch of junk. I also put a sign on it with prices, and something to do with «clean environment – priceless».
When I brought it in for grading, a custodian thought it was trash and put a sign on it that it needed to be taken care of, which my instructors loved.

It is trash, but also makes us think. There’s also usually a story behind why the artist did what they did.

It’s not my type of art, that’s for sure. I can see the meaning of it but it’s not thought provoking enough for me to appreciate it as art.

    1. Neither for me, I find it very simple, not thought provoking and something that did not take either talent or effort to create. Thank you Cassa Bassa.
