#art, Great Artists Series: Constantin Brâncuși…

(Photo 3 Seas Europe)

This is one heavy duty Rumanian sculptor and painter who is one of the fathers of «Modern Art» (whatever that is)… After all all art is contemporary and all art is modern at one time… In any event, his works are well known in many countries besides Rumania.

Brâncuși was born in 1876… He worked the fields as a shepherd and then did other manual labour jobs as he taught himself to read. Later he was admitted to the Bucarest School of Fine Arts. In 1904 he went to Paris to continue his art education. His time allowed him to coincide with artists like Rodin and the Impressionists. And from 1909 to 1910 he worked with Amedeo Modigliani… He exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Boston… He returned to Rumania in 1923 already a world recognised artist…

Constantin Brâncuși was an artist interested in many things that ranged from science to music. He befriended many of the intellectuals of his day. In Paris his circle included musicians, artists and poets like Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, as well as other Rumanians like Emil Cioran.

Brâncuși died in París on the 16th of March 1957 and is buried in Montparnasse cemetery.
