#art, #opinion, Stray Dogs on City Streets: Big Problem in Turkey

(CNN en español)

Turkey is like my second home. I live part of the summer on the Aegean coast close to Izmir, and I have been coming to this area for about 25 years. I love the area and the people, what I do not like is the stray dogs that populate our streets here. It is dangerous and a public health problem. In 2019 I travelled about some of the small towns and took these pictures and created this video to exemplify the problem. Hopefully it will be resolved soon and these poor animals will be sheltered appropriately. The only dogs one should see on the streets should be on a leash and walking with their owner.

In some cases the dogs should be walking the owner, since often they dog is better behaved or trained than the owner. 🧐😞😉

    1. That is so true, especially owners who walk their dogs and do not pick up after them, or pour water after they pee!

Got that right, Francisco! Diluting the pee with water is not a thing in the US but picking up dog poop is. But lazy dog owners don’t want to be bothered.

      2. That’s the problem and then people blame the dogs. It’s the irresponsible owners, bloody hell!

  3. I have seen a lot of free dogs all over Turkey, including in Istanbul… At first it seemed worrying to me, but most of them have chips and are well fed.

    1. Yes, in many other cities throughout Turkey. Dogs do not belong on city streets. Thank you.

      1. If they behave well and people take care of them…I don’t see the problem! There are also cats; in the bookstores in the bazaar… A couple of years ago I volunteered in Cape Verde rescuing dogs and cats from the streets; Many accustomed to living on the streets were castrated and returned to their neighborhood; because there they were happy and did not pose any problem.

      2. That is very honourable of you indeed, but dogs belong only with their owners, not roaming and living in the streets. They are a potential problem to people and also a health hazard, not to mention the fact that some people abuse of them and also cars can hit them. I have seen a lot of dogs in certain town with only three legs, meaning they have been hit. And ultimately, dogs do not belong in the streets, no matter how well they are fed or cared for. If they care so much they should collect them, take them home and put them on a leash. it is nice talking to you. Cats do not pose the same problem.

      3. Unfortunately we don’t think the same. I have always had dogs and I have never considered them as belongings. They have been companions and I have paid their expenses and many times I have regretted that the dogs can no longer live as they used to. Returning home to eat and sleep… A cousin of mine had a dog in Buenos Aires that even took the bus and returned home on time… There are people who abuse animals, obviously! But those who should live locked up are the abusers.
        Greetings

Sounds like a long cool drink is required already. Have one for me. Oddly enough, as we speak, I’m scanning some prints I took around Fethiye that I took back in 1998.

      5. Yes, it is almost time for a cold beer… Fethiye, I will be going there in September, just about 3 hours by car from where I am.

I’m currently scanning some pics of a place called Kayakoy (Livissi in Greek). Look it up. Have a great weekend!

      7. We went there one summer back in 2005, we climbed to the top of the castle with this little old lady selling handkerchiefs and scarves in a basket. I didn’t think she could climb, but she was like a goat! Yes a beautiful place where we took a lot of nice pics of the sea. It looks like you know the coastal regions pretty well Malc. Ever come to Cesme? (Sissus in the original Greek).

No, I don’t know Turkey very well at all. I’m more familiar with the Greek Islands. It’s all lovely though isn’t it?

      9. It is, I remember that my grandmother had told me that her father had been a Spanish marine officer and upon retirement had actually lived for a few years in Constantinople (yes I know it is Istanbul but…) I love this Aegean area, the Greek islands and the coastal area of Turkey. I feel like I kind of belong here, it feels very comfortable for me, although I do not speak either of the two languages… Maybe I lived here in a past life?

LOL And then there’s the history and mythology to throw in with the scenery, weather and ambience.
