#poem, «Universe» (An Euro-Ku)

The line that stretches between sea and sky extends forever, and we pretend it’s the horizon,

and the line pretends it is a limit,

but the universe is limitless and endless, and each thing we see and feel are intimate parts of a perfect whole and are also infinite, although they may seem like fantasy or pretend to be reality.

The Euro-Ku I started to develop back in very early 2022 when I truly fell in love with the idea behind the Haiku, or Japanese poetry. As a Westerner I have no experience, knowledge or history, to allow me to think and write as an Easterner, and more so, as a Japanese poet. My respect and admiration for Japan’s culture, literature and art prohibit me from mocking their traditional form and trying, from my Western European position, to write a legitimate Haiku. Therefore I invented the «Euro-Ku» that is written in the spirit of traditional Japanese poetry, but from a totally Western perspective.

The rules are simple enough. We have three verses and the Euro-Ku must be accompanied by an original illustration also property of the poet. The verses need no syllabic count but they must flow clearly and easily into each other, seeking to complete the thought. There should be no sentences that just float off into outer space and no pirouetting in the void. The message must be loud and clear in Western fashion. If you follow this simple formula you have written an Euro-Ku and perhaps you will come to understand and respect the spirit of the art that is done by peoples of other cultures and places.

  1. So beautiful, Francisco! I like very much this idea of Euro-Ku; I must try it one of these days… As for you, I am fond of eastern Haiku, but writing them seems somehow out of place. Thank you for your inspiring words and innovative style. Light and blessings to you*

    1. Light and blessings to you too Susana, thank you so much! I am so glad you liked the poem and the style. I too feel very close to the traditional Haiku but I know that I cannot do it justice in the Japanese way.

  3. I agree that no Westerner or anybody but Japanese poets can write haiku and be culturally correct. I started writing haiku as an exercise in discipline. It hones my writing skills to embody images and ideas in such a compact space.
