Tolkien was born (1892) in the Orange Free State, in South Africa, a Boer staet but partially controlled by the British and which later (1902) was later defeated and became part of the British Empire. Of course we all know him as the author of «The Hobbit» and «The Lord of the Rings«, but did you know he was a rather brilliant illustrator? No? Well, I’ll tell you and show you…

So what do you think? Not only was he a poet, a philologist, a professor of languages (he spoke about 10 languages), but now you know he was a magnificent illustrator. He dominated drawing techniques and applied them brilliantly to his imaginative powers.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J. R. R. Tolkien) died in 1973 and is buried with his wife of fifty five years, Edith Marie, at the Wolvercote Cemetery in Oxford, England.
Definitely he is one of my favourites. I have read his books many times and still enjoy them tremendously, not to mention the movies made of his works. A true master of the word and the image.
