#music, It’s The Middle Of The Week- Part 3, Songs of Wonder…

In part one I presented to you three of my favourite rock and roll songs played by three of my favourite rock and rollers. Here in part two I bring you some of the songs I cannot quite place in the same category, but that are outstanding in many ways.

  1. «God Only Knows» is the song that Paul McCartney fell in love with and inspired him to go forwards with the Sgt. Pepper’s project. He also considers it his favourite song, as well as the best song ever written, and so does Jimmy Webb, among many other rock and pop artists. The song was written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher for the Beach Boys’ 1966 album Pet Sounds.

2. «Save Your Heart For Me» by Gary Lewis (son of the comic genius Jerry Lewis, whom we love! We love you Jerry!!!) and The Playboys is one of their hits from 1965. Ok, some, or maybe many, will think this is just another silly love song, but I think it is a fab representative of the music, the lifestyle and the rhythm of the times. Of course I was just a wee lad at the time and I remember learning the words to this song as a way of learning to speak English…

3. «Kicks» was a 1966 hit by Paul Revere and The Raiders. I also remember this one from my very young years but I was never able to sing along, and I always thought they sang «kids» instead of kicks… Written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the song was originally meant for the English rock group The Animals, but Eric Burden turned it down. I don’t know, there’s something about this song that makes me not really want to place it as a genuine «rock» song…

I am really hoping to hear what you think about these songs, bloody hell, if you even remember them or know them. Well, if you don’t listen to them over and over again and if someone asks you why, tell them they’re part of your doctoral thesis on proctology…

Cheers…

While all three of these took me immediately back to mid 1960, that time was so full of other events demanding serious attention I had no time to enjoy them as I did pieces earlier and after. They subsequently do not grab me with the ferocity of «Fortunate Son» «Eve Of Destruction» or «Green Beret.»

    1. That often happens and it happened to me with many songs from the late 70’s and early 80’s when I was carrying an M-16 and… Thank you Espie! All the best!

I liked these songs well enough but they never really captured the decade like some other songs did. I probably wouldn’t turn the song off but I would not feel any interest in looking for it.

The music that speaks to each of us is a personal response and does not mean that what we prefer is better or worse than any one else’s choice.

      2. Yes, so true Pat. Not everyone likes the same music, or literature or art. You’ve said it well.

Thanks, Francisco. I have never been able to get my head around most jazz and I know that a lot of people (including you) think it is wonderful. Doesn’t make it good or bad. Same with where to live, what to eat, how to dress…. but some actions like deliberate cruelty are bad–no matter how you dress it up. We don’t care if you were just kidding or not! (Hint Hint Orange Man).

    1. Absolutely! Tastes are personal and to be always respected, but cruel actions, criminal offenses and other such unacceptable conduct are considered bad in all cases and in all places. And for sure, the orange man means it when he jokes…
