#art, How About Horace Pippin?

(Photo Angelus News)

He was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1888… He was a self-taught artist that painted various themes including his experiences fighting in World War I… His most famous works are a reference to the Black experience in the United States as slaves… The New York Times classified him as the most important Negro painter of the United States… He served in the 369th Infantry Regiment during the Great War and faced not only enemy troops but enormous racism until his unit was placed under French command. The 369th was the regiment that spent more time in the front lines of the war and was awarded the French Cross, La Croix de Guerre… He started his art career during the 1920’s and in the 1930’s he began painting on canvas with «The Ending of the War: Starting Home

He said that the paintings come to his head and if they were worth painting he would paint them. He painted Biblical scenes, still life, and political manifestations but mostly about his personal experiences during the war and of the new century…

(«Self-Portrait»/The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

Pippin painted approximately 140 works and most of them are in various museum collections like: Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden of Washington D. C.; The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Barnes Foundation of Philadelphia, PA; The Brandywine River Museum of Chadds Ford; The Phillips Collection of Washington D. C.; The Baltimore Museum of Art and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The painting «The Park Bench» (1946) was left unfinished due to his death. Romare Bearden (US painter) thought the man in the painting was Pippin who, at the end of his voyage and his mission, sits happily, in the autumn of his years, alone on a park bench. Probably…

I encourage you to look further into the work of this great US Negro painter who in my opinion was one, if not the best…

This one know him well from readings he was in the K Company, the 3rd Battalion of the 369th infantry regiment, known for their bravery in battle as the famous Harlem Hellfighters. Put under the command of the French Army. They were the longest serving U.S. regiment on the war’s frontlines, holding their ground against enemy fire almost continuously from early April until the end of the war. The regiment as a whole was awarded the French Croix de Guerre.

In Florida, he would probably be forbidden to be taught, if they even knew who he was.

      2. Oi! You’re right! Florida has gotten crazy with this governor. But I am sure that in South Florida he would be well known and respected. The north of Florida is the problem, south Fla. is and has always been very left wing and liberal and always voted Democratic…

From what I have heard in the past few elections, even Miami Dade is changing from helping Florida remain a swing state to reliably red. 😥

Very wise. US may default on Friday and the Speaker of the House gave them a holiday until Wednesday. Makes no sense.

      2. Incredible! They are doing everything so that Trump wins. It is a shame on Democrats that in four years in a country of 300 million people that they could not put up a viable, young candidate!

Many of us agree with you. What many people refuse to realize is that Trump is only 3 years younger than Biden and is likely in even worse shape physically and mentally.

There are many days we half heartedly wonder where we might like to immigrate if he were to win. It will become the US in name only. I keep thinking how Hitler came to power legally.

      2. That’s so true and as we’ve seen Trump already did a “dress rehearsal” which taught him which holes he needs to plug the next time…

Arghhhh. Now he wants to take over the Republican National Committee so he can siphon all of the money. People don’t seem concerned about this
