Desde la época de Aristoteles, y probablemente antes, se habla y se teoriza sobre el arte. El filosofo griego dijo que el arte no era ni político ni moralista y que, gracias a esa condición, se interrelaciona con el comportamiento humano y la sabiduría, ya que el arte podia mostrar una cara de la realidad que no se encuentra en el caos ni en lo aleatorio de nuestra vida cotidiana.
Tolstoy dijo: «El artista es un hombre que lo sabe dibujar y pintar todo.» (fijaos que dijo «un hombre» dando entender que excluía a las mujeres artistas, cosa muy típica de su época).
Schuman dijo: «Iluminar las profundidades del corazón humano es la misión del artista.»
Napoleon dijo: «Amo el poder, pero como lo ama un artista…»
Lenin dijo: «El arte pertenece al pueblo. Debe enterrar sus raíces tan profundamente como sea posible en el corazón de las masas trabajadoras. Debe ser comprendido y amado por ellos».
George Balanchine dijo: «No quiero que la vida imite al arte, quiero que la vida sea arte.»
Hitler dijo: «El teatro, el arte, la literatura, el cine, la prensa, los carteles y las exhibiciones en las ventanas deben ser purgados de todas las manifestaciones de nuestro mundo podrido y ponerse al servicio de una idea moral, política y cultural.»

My Spanish is very rusty, but I’ve done my best to read your post. Thank you for the quotes you’ve shared. It’s never right for a political figure to dictate what is art and what isn’t. It’s never right for a political leader to shut down individual creativity. I shudder to think of all the examples of artistic expression that were squelched by Hitler.

Thank you so much Janet, I truly appreciate your efforts, and although I try to….most of the time…translate my posts, some I cannot. Yes, you are right. Political figures do not have the inherent right to shut down individual creativity. Actually, when democracy was established in Ancient Greece, the politicians to be, which could be anybody from the «polis» had to be educated men (no women at the time) that not only knew rhetoric but philosophy as well. Therefore the leaders were men with artistic sensibilities as well as being good orators. In any event, the thought is that leaders are not there to squelch creativity or individual expression but they were there to promote it. How different today’s supposed «democracy»… All the best.
