I’ll start by saying that both his parents were artists, his father somewhat of a post-impressionist and his mother somewhat of an art informel or what in the US would be called «abstract impressionism». Therefore, although it is said that Klein received no formal training in art, he had to have had more than enough training at home. No one is completely self-taught. He probably started painting around 1946 after graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy. In 1948 he joined the Rosicrucian Society… Yves was born in Nice, France in 1928… He was a part of the French artistic movement called Nouveau réalisme, which was founded by art critic Pierre Restany in 1960… Klein played a key part in the development of performance art, minimal art and pop art… He developed International Klein Blue…
Yves Klein is not one of my favourite artists, however I have included him here because he is a part of art history, albeit a part that has not really provided much to art or to history. And maybe one that can be replaced by so many talented artists not included. His paintings are insipid and boring and his musical composition, Monotone Silence Symphony of 1949, (apparently he did not know the definition of a symphony), was nothing more than one chord, sustained for twenty minutes followed by twenty minutes of silence. It was quite obvious he knew nothing of music as anyone can write a «symphony» like that. To subject an audience to such a «concert» would be criminal…
I’ll leave you with a sample that will introduce you to his entire work…
