#art, Mujeres artistas – Women Artists: Tamara Lempicka

This is one of the painters I don’t like. There are others like Frida Kahlo and Tracy Emin… Lempicka’s paintings seem to be made for fashion magazine covers and her models, in other words, the women she paints, seem haughty and conceited… Lempicka was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898, her art is said to be «Art Deco». Her paintings made her famous in France and the United States… Of high birth from a noble family, well-educated, she spoke several languages… in 1918 she got married and moved to Paris to pursue art studies… She was the favourite of Hollywood celebrities and was called the «baroness with a brush»… She painted female portraits and nudes in the art deco style… she said that her influences were Botticelli, Bronzino, and cubism, and she used them together in a type of eclecticism or fusion of styles, but her idea of cubism is far from that of Picasso or Braque… She died in 1980 in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

I will say that although I do not like her work, she needs to be known as she is important, although big stars like Barbara Streisand, Jack Nicholson and Madonna already know her well and collect her paintings…

I like some of her period pieces. But to each their own. Thanks for including her.

  5. I admire Tamara de Lempicka. In her portraits she manages to capture the personality and essence of her models. She often depicts strong, confident women who lived in a time when women’s rights and identity were in flux. These depictions are not only aesthetically pleasing but also emotionally charged; they convey a feeling of strength and independence.
