#music, Music For The Middle of The Week: «Imagine»

(Art Digital by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

«Imagine«, written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono is an anthem to life… It is a song which expresses how we ought to think and act. It is a song about loving one’s self but at the same time being conscious of those who surround us. And believe me, the «world» is us, we all share DNA and we are all one. If there were no borders, there would be no conflicts, no countries, no wars, no religion, just love surrounding us and all of us, no possessions, just «sharing all the world.»

I know everyone knows the words to this song, but I think some may have forgotten, so I will leave you the lyrics…

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Livin’ for today
Ah
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Livin’ life in peace
You
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Since this song was played to death on the radio (in those days we listened to music on the radio) a lot of people just tuned it off. I did. For many years I could not listen to it, but I was reminded of the lyrics today and I thought I should give it another listen. And the song remains as fresh and as real as it was the first time I heard it. I think that in these days of extreme selfishness and the «I, me mine» (like the song by The Beatles) attitude, we should all reconsider our beliefs and open our minds to new and better possibilities…

The song was released as a single in the US in 1971 and in the UK in 1975. The Guinness World Records British Hit Singles Book named it the second-best single of all time. And, before the Times Square Ball drops on New Year’s Eve, everyone gathered sings «Imagine». This has been done since 2005. New Yorkers, as well as the entire nation and visitors believe the world could be a better place…

Yoko described it like this: «Just what John believed: that we are all one country, one world, one people.»

President Jimmy Carter said, «in many countries around the world—my wife and I have visited about 125 countries—you hear John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ used almost equally with national anthems.»

Ringo Starr said in a 1981 interview with Barbara Walters: «he said ‘imagine’, that’s all. Just imagine it.»

So imagine it and enjoy…

  2. A beautiful song with beautiful words, but it’s idealistic and unrealistic. Humans would have to evolve to such a high level in order to achieve this dream! In reality, humans seem to be devolving. Have we reached our «Peter Principle?» Getting rid of borders, religion, etc., would not change human nature. Sharing DNA does not guarantee unity. Any family is a witness to that. There will always be bad people who crave power and riches to the detriment of others. There will always be conflict of some sort, poverty, and unnecessary deaths until humans evolve into a higher state of consciousness and spirituality; and since this is also an idealistic view of the world which has been promoted for centuries, I do not see that happening any time soon. I’m a realist and a rationalist. Survival is the uppermost thought in most people’s minds, which makes humans selfish, self-serving, and dangerous, given the right circumstances. People also have hearts and compassion and empathy, but not enough to change the world or human nature. The 1960s are a testament to that because most people sold out for money and celebrity. All we can really do is change ourselves and our own little piece of the world. I love John Lennon and the Beatles and all the music from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. And I used to be a young «dreamer» who wanted to change the world. But the world never changes. It goes through cycles of peace and prosperity and poverty and war. Even Jesus said that his kingdom is not of this world. BUT we should always hold up high ideals to strive for, regardless, and live our best lives.

    1. It’s something to hope for, something to imagine, like a visualisation or a prayer. Jesus also said «love your neighbour» and be a «good Samaritan» without thinking of borders or where they come from… Thank you so much Dawn.

      2. You are right, Francisco, we all need ideals to work toward. That’s something Jesus understood very well.
