#opinion, Who is «illegal» and why?

(Art Digital by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Does a man commit an illegal act by climbing over a fence to enter a country that can offer a better life for himself and his family? Should there even be such a fence? The struggle for existence is a hard one for many people in many places of the world that have been ruined by wars, communism and other destructive forces. So, is it a crime to want to leave? Should we not all try to seek higher ground? Don’t we have a duty to ourselves and to our families to provide as best as we can?

The United States, the United Kingdom and most of Europe is a haven for people seeking shelter from the ravishes of disastrous countries of the Third World. Our countries are considered First World, industrialised, civilised and developed and with the capacity to absorb whatever the world can throw at them. Especially the United States. Europe is the old continent. We are settled people with roots that go back to pre-history, but the US is a new land and a large one, where everybody, including the Indians, arrived from somewhere else. So in a most direct, historical way, everybody there was, at one time, an «Illegal» alien.

But the term «illegal alien», which many in the US choose to use to dehumanise those who would come to seek a better life in the US, is an ugly title indeed to place upon any human being. As I have seen and heard, many, probably led by the virulent ideas of Donald Trump, think that those who would cross the US/Mexico border are nothing more than scoundrels who wish to come to their country to pillage and destroy. But nothing could be further from the truth. Those are racist thoughts fuelled by hate and fear.

Immigrants come to work. Those on the other side of the fence are families, children, young men and women who also deserve a piece of the pie. They have committed no crime to be labelled as illegal or as aliens and they have a right to be there. And why? Because the US is a land of immigrants and the greatness of the country is thanks to its being open to immigrants from all over the world. Should the US close itself to immigrants it would not function as it has for the last hundred years of its existence.

It’s about time that all of us start thinking that we do not own the world. Everybody else has as much right as we do. Hating them does nothing but rot our soul, destroy our spirit and places us at odds with God Himself who so loved the world…

They are criminals, the word illegal says it right there. What is the harm in asking permission to enter a country? I don’t see how living like a fugitive, always looking over your shoulder, can be a good life.

    1. Thanks for your opinion George. I remember serving with some who initially entered as you say without asking permission. They fought just like the rest…

I’ve heard that before, but they were also serving because they were promised citizenship afterward. Plus, we have been getting far too many criminals in with the rest. 300,000 at one station is overload – they are tearing the border cities and country apart trying to care for them.

hahaha, that’s the problem. We have plenty of home-grown criminals, we don’t need to deal with everyone else’s.

All wants to be better that is human nature, but they need to look at improving inside not outside. If you want to leave you go thru the requirements as legal immigration. I left legal from Cuba to Spain as Spanish citizen and many have even as of today. The way to go. Countries need to monitor who is coming in.

I’ve been a U.S. citizen my whole life and I don’t remember doing anything to earn it. If If I lived in a country that didn’t have the resources for my family’s survival or a country that I thought wasn’t safe for my kids, I’m sure I would be willing to climb any wall or bypass any borders someone created. And I would think that other human beings would show some compassion and put themselves in my shoes. I wouldn’t expect to be labeled as inhuman or a criminal from another planet. And if I was willing to take my family and run towards another country, knowing that I didn’t speak the language, knowing that I’d be judged, and knowing that I’d be taking a huge risk, then I’d have to be running from something pretty awful, right? And if I’m gonna take a risk like that, chances are I probably don’t have the time, the money, or even the knowledge to try and become a legal citizen. And if I’m willing to risk my life and work my ass off in another country that labels me an illegal alien, then it isn’t me who has to change on the inside, is it? It’s kind of criminal to convince society that other humans don’t belong in a country that they don’t even own. And if you came to this country all legal and legit, then maybe you should consider yourself lucky. Not everybody can do that.

One of the times we will violently disagree. Nations are of laws whether democratic or from dictators. Violating the laws of a nation as a citizen or hopeful citizen demonstrates disregard and disrespect for that nation; for citizen-hopefuls it further guarantees one will be a poor citizen and does not deserve entry.

    1. That’s not the way it is. Human need surpasses any arbitrary law and the law of survival also trumps those other laws as well. The need to save a human being far outweighs obedience to any such illogical and inhuman law. Especially in the US, a nation of immigrants. All deserve entry. There is no immigration problem in the US, there is more than enough room for all. Thank you.

      1. How many immigrants are we supposed to take in until the country collapses? We don’t need them. We have enough population. As this problem grows, people will harden their hearts even more because we all suffer from overpopulation and fewer resources available for American citizens. And, from an environmental point of view, illegal immigration increases overpopulation and the continued downfall of our cities into polluted cesspools. And it doesn’t matter what color, religion, ethnicity or race illegals happen to be. I don’t subscribe to the drug-fueled John Lennon «Imagine» mentality, which is unrealistic anyway.

  8. There is a legal way and an illegal way to come to America. Illegal aliens (the official government term) are a burden on society when they just crawl over the border with no forethought and resources in place. Legal immigrants are forced to wait years to get into the country and become citizens. Americans have no problem with legal immigrants. It’s the illegals – the ones who have no respect for our laws and the will of the American people – who are unwelcome. Right now, the drug cartels and human traffickers are controlling our borders – an unacceptable situation. Compassion is one thing – lack of common sense is something else.

    1. Thank you Dawn, for proffering your point of view. I totally disagree but you have a right to your opinion.

      1. I understand your point of view, Francisco, but it’s unrealistic and never going to happen. Furthermore, Mexico has offered jobs to the people passing through that country, and the migratory travelers turned them down. You complain constantly about Spain and its problems. Well, Americans have an equal right to complain and protect their country. We are not obligated to support the whole world.

        Le gusta a 1 persona

      2. That is your opinion and I respect it. I don’t complain about Spain’s immigration policies. I complain about things that affect day to day life as citizens of the European Union. Our history is totally different from the US.

        Le gusta a 1 persona

      3. Spain has a history of monarchy and violence. The USA has a similar history. I agree that the EU has imposed a lot of things on people that make it more of a dictatorship. I believe the EU should be disbanded. I will always defend freedom first. But I also believe in law and order. We can’t have thousands of people crossing American borders every day without feeling the negative repercussions. Even Democrats are beginning to understand that. But Republicans are just as guilty about being lax on the border and encouraging cheap labor. Neither one wants to enforce the immigration laws that already exist. I’m an Independent and dislike both parties, political parties, and politicians in general. Have a blessed day!

        Le gusta a 1 persona

      4. Thank you for the blessings, likewise. I believe in the EU and support it. My criticisms of Spain are based solely on the actions of independentists, right wing nuts and communists who want to change the way we talk and act. Spain is not a nation of immigrants and yes, we’ve a monarchy, but we are not a violent nation. We brought civilisation to America. The US is a nation of immigrants and as such it owes its strength and size on immigrants.

        Le gusta a 1 persona

      5. Yes, on LEGAL immigrants who offer value to the country. That’s not racism. That’s protecting the country from abuse and exploitation. If you talked to people in the New World, they would not say that Spain civilized it. They would point out that Spain enslaved, abused, and killed off the native population. In fact, it was the British who brought civilization to America, for better or worse. Modern Spain seems like a wonderful country. I can understand why you live there. I do not know of any civilized country that does not have a history of some violence. I find your point of view very interesting, and I won’t plague you again with questions and comments. I like your passion – which you also put into your music, poetry, and art. Have a blessed day!

        Le gusta a 1 persona

      6. The British brought civilisation to America!!! Incredible! Well I guess you have the right to your opinions and beliefs no matter how much they differ from actual history. And by the way, the legend that says that Spaniards did those cruel things to Americans (and by the way, America is a continent, not a country) is just that, a legend. So please do not proffer statements and opinions that slander other countries and histories and no one in this world is illegal… Thank you and as far as I am concerned this conversation has extended itself far enough.
