COLLEAGUES

I ask my colleagues of art, of painting and sculpture,
How can I express art so the message persists,
through this thick coat of paint, or this bronze or this marble,
so it reaches quite clearly to the minds of the swifts?

And I turn now to you, fellow poets and writers,
how can I express gentle moments I fear,
with a metaphor? A simile? Or with just a few pronouns,
so it reaches quite swiftly to the minds and the ears?

How do I find tenses, and genders, and adverbs,
the notes or the lines that can penetrate souls,
and deliver my well born and deep felt impressions,
yes, how can I do this and not lose control?

I know in my heart that the answer is hiding,
within a dream that I dreamt while I napped yesterday,
but I cannot recall, the image eludes me,
so I’ll just keep on painting and ranting and writing…
