#music, Sunday Music: The Dave Clark Five…

(Photo Rock Cellar Magazine)

This was the band that John Lennon thought could steal the limelight from the Beatles during the «British invasion» of America (US)… And this was my favourite song for a long time as a lad…

(actually there is a kind of John Lennon look alike there, no?)

Cheers…

I used to prefer them over the Beetles, except Paul’s ballads.

    1. During those years they were both competing for an audience especially in the US…

Enjoyed them a great deal at the time. Not overtly as quirky as the Fab Four, had Col Parker been their manager, they might have bested the Liverpoolians. Nah, probably not.

    1. One never knows, plus they needed much more songwriting skills, which was one of the advantages of The Beatles…

Oh, no! My father used to sing this. He even has a recording of it. And so I thought The Beatles sang it!!! 😱😱😱 I only learned now! I’ll ask him tomorrow when he wakes up. Thank you, Sir.

    1. Wow! That’s great Adelheid! They did kind of sound like the Beatles…

Well, I’m learning from you, Sir.
My father used to record songs for personal satisfaction. He sang in our church and was also the church’s drummer. Used to.😊 I always wonder why I didn’t inherit his singing voice, though. 😁

      2. That is great Adelheid! I also sang at church for a while a long, long time ago, although I really don’t think much of my singing voice. I guess if you can carry a melody you can sing, the quality or timbre of the voice is something different though… but remember that in singing ,as in just about everything else, practice makes perfect. All the best.

The Dave Clark Five were the first group to threaten the dominance of Merseybeat when Glad All Over knocked I Want Hold Your Hand off top spot in the UK charts. It didn’t stop the Mersey Sound dominating but they certainly brought London into the thick of the music scene and the Swinging Sixties – and that was before the Stones came on the scene. Glad All Over always got everyone up on the dance floor. They did do some other good stuff like the one you’ve included but their early stuff like Glad All Over and Bits&Pieces was what they’ll really be remembered for.

    1. Yes, so true, and it was said that Lennon feared them as he thought they would opaque the Beatles shining light. I always enjoyed their music and I think they could have been just as big a smash but they lacked one thing and that was Lennon/McCartney. The writing skills, the ability to create pop hits that those two had really was the steam that pushed the Beatles engine forward into history. Have a happy Sunday afternoon Malc and all the best!

  8. They were like a Magritte painting on stage or something out of musical theatre. I loved them.
