#art, How about André Butzer…

(Photo Banditto Art)

Now this is an artist I was not familiar with at all, and it doesn’t surprise me because I do not like any of his works. So why am I writing about him? Because he is an artist, he is part of Art History and because one of my favourite museums in Madrid, the Thyssen-Bornemisza is doing a retrospective of his work….

André Butzer was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1973 (then West Germany). He now lives in Rangsdorf, a small, but beautiful municipality not far from Berlin. He is supposed to be a «semi-abstract» painter, (whatever that is, if someone knows, please explain it to me). His main interest, supposedly, are comics. His work, as you will see, is infantile and rather naif. He uses mainly (I would even venture to say exclusively) primary colours, unmixed and most likely just squeezed from the tube. He doesn’t seem to me to spend too much time thinking about composition or colour scheme and when it comes to titling his work he doesn’t even think at all as most of his paintings are titled «Untitled.»

Most of his exhibitions have been in his native land and this retrospective in Madrid is the only one he has ever had outside of it. Here are some of the paintings (22 in total) that you will see should you choose to attend.

Yo tampoco conocía a este pintor. Por lo que muestras es una pintura colorista y un poco ingenua, efectivamente parece un arte para niños.
      Feliz finde.

His paintings look like they were stolen from a third-grade art class, and these are the ones that didn’t get hung in the hallway for parent/teacher’s day. I applaud his desire to express, but question his talent.

    1. LOL! You are so right my friend! Maybe his third grade grandson did them and he’s taking credit? No, but I fully agree with you. Thanks Brad and all the best!

Los niños, incluso los que pintan peor, son más libres y transmiten más. Esto se siente como una burla al modo de pintar a los niños, como algo que se quedó encerrado y creció encerrado. No sé bien qué decir.

It begs the question as to whether the museum charged to see the exhibition Francesc.

    1. Incredible! They should give free lunches to all who venture to visit. Or they could have asked a third grade class to create an exhibit, I am sure it would have been more interesting…

His work has the thought and sophistication of a middle school student. Have to agree with you on this one.

  8. Really enjoyed this post, especially on how forthcoming you were around the artist you were researching.
Perhaps the artist may change the titles once he finds something that really fits the piece? Also ‘untitled’ is in itself a title 🙌 untitled also allows viewers to create their own story and own title…

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, I’ve “untitled” a few myself!

      1. Haha – this is great! Some pieces I cannot settle on a title, so it ends up being Untitled – lately I have been trying more to title my works

      2. No, I’ve a couple of “untitled” pieces but I titled them that way on purpose. Some artists have just given their work numbers, like the American neo-impressionist Whistler…

      3. Oh yes! Numbers as titles slipped my mind – it is fascinating to think how much thought can go into the title alone even with decision to have it as untitled.

      4. Sometimes, but sometimes no thought at all… look through some of Miró’s work and you’ll find thoughtlessness in composition and title…
