And here is the crux of the matter, that inevitably, when you read about these latest school shootings, you will read that the assault rifles were legally obtained…
And then you scratch your head, you rub your eyes, you shake and scream out, in what civilised country can eighteen year olds legally purchase military-style assault rifles!!! This is the problem. No matter how many times «they» try to blame it on mental health issues, isolation, alienation, video games, bad parenting, television shows that give bad examples, or whatever else, the truth is that only guns kill and without the easy availability of guns these things would not happen.
It is incredible that in the US schools are not safe. And it is not the fault of the schools. Children all over the world are being raised to think they are «special» that they are little «kings and princesses.» Borders, respect, obedience to authority and discipline are not taught. Children are encouraged to decide, to select, to choose even which gender they prefer to be. All of this without education, without formation and without a background of knowledge. How can something not go terribly wrong, if on top of all that they can go to a store and buy an assault rifle, all the bullets they want and then…
Then tragedy…
This recent school shooting is another sad event that will soon be forgotten.💔🥺 when will we ever learn?
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
That is the question. Haven’t we learned already? Why do these politicians want to defend the right to bear arms by children, untrained and unsupervised? When a policeman enters the police academy they are not allowed to carry a weapon until they go through the qualifying phase and pass it. So if it is that difficult for police, who are our armed sentinels (and I was one of them for 30 years in Miami) why should it be so simple for civilians? Thank you so much Mich. All the best and greetings from Spain.

My heart really goes out to the parents of those innocent children💔🥺 and yes, Francisco i am with you when on the control and regulation of gun ownership. Buying a gun these days is like going to the supermarket and buying a piece of meat.

In the end it is resumed in sadness and tears and the forever question in the hearts of those parents, why…

Amen!!! we could not agree more. Scott and I believe that the police should have access to weapons and the active military. Unfortunately, even the military in the United States suicides with military after a tour are very high in the US, so even that probably isn’t a good idea. All assault weapons should be banned. This is a great post and another great reminder of who’s really responsible for what’s happening in the United States. This is something Scott and I feel incredibly strong about as living in the South people can actually shoot their gun in a subdivision if they are outside of the city limits, which we are as long as they put a target on a tree in their yard. People shoot multiple rounds off from assault weapons inside our subdivision all the time. That is another reason we want to get out of here. We were appalled when we found out it was legal and not only is it legal but people do this in the dark at night. By the time you could call the police to investigate if they would even send anybody they would never find the person shooting. I hope that people will read this post and understand what you are saying, very well it, is not the fault of little children or children. They should not be allowed to get automatic or any kind of weapons as far as I am concerned, unless they are with the police or the military. Thank you Francisco for this post.

You raise some very important points Joni, both you and Scott know from your experiences at or near your home, but many people are not aware of the power and the danger of a military-style assault rifle and to think that an untrained, unsupervised 18 year old can just walk in and buy one is incredible! It boggles the mind (as one of my old sergeants used to say). I will say that in the police academy they do not allow police officer trainees to carry weapons until they have passed the shooting phase and have qualified with their firearm. So, if it is that difficult for a cop to get a gun, and they are our armed sentinels, why is it so simple for a civilian? Thank you so much Joni, and Scott. You two stay blessed. Big hugs from us here in Spain.

Thank you Francis, this subject is one that seems it will never be just DEALT with. Every day has become a nightmare – of what will happen next. Thank you always for your educational pieces and hopefully it will do some good. Blessing and hugs to you both!

Thank you so much Joni. We are free from fear as we live on faith. Many blessings and all the best.

this will never change until we stop worshiping the gun culture and ban them.

You already know my thoughts in general F, but when you allow somebody to have weapons like these, then what can you expect when it all goes so horribly wrong ? Maybe the way that the political parties in the US needs to take a serious look at how they are funded. What do you think?
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
Well, most of the Republicans are funded by the NRA (National Rifle Association) who has a vested interest in the proliferation and continued sale of guns to whoever wants one… Good point. Until that changes, nothing will. And I am not against gun ownership. I think it should be regulated and there should be procedures, just like getting a driving permit, you go through an Auto-School, you learn the theory, then you go do your practices and once you pass both exams, you get your permit. I think with guns it should be a similar pattern. Or follow what the police academy does, have a civilian academy to train and educate future gun owners. But only with handguns, no military style weapons, those should be exclusive for the military. More or less, that is what I think. After all I always carried a gun in Miami but I was trained and licensed.

That’s just the sort of response that I would expect from you Francesc, and one that I can fully understand. Thanks for a fuller explanation. It makes things clearer, even if not acceptable for those who suffer from these terrible attrocities.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
You’re right mate, it clarifies but it isn’t acceptable, but that’s the world we live in… have a good night and all the best.

You too my friend 🙂

I could follow your rationale until you got to gender identification. I have heard too many tales of children as young as preschool self identifying as a different gender to think that this equates to your other points. I totally agree with you about gun control and how children need to be taught respect, laws, and how to behave.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
No, I don’t mean to imply that there aren’t cases like those you mention. There are legitimate ones, but these new laws are frivolous and they do not respect the reality that these conditions must be explained and sustained by medical documentation. That is what I meant because now, in Florida, for example, I was just told, that a lad can decide, at any moment of any day, that he is a lass, and vice-versa and they are teaching even grade school children that there are more than two genders. I cannot agree with such things…
Me gustaMe gusta
I’ll agree that the new laws are frivolous and are made for political gain, particularly in Florida. Restricting a college Advanced Placement Course in High School because it includes too many elements that a few people find distasteful is outrageous. I can see this for elementary or middle school students but not for a high school student taking a class for college credit. Florida is the poster child for skewed points of view.

Yup. And with the last two governors Florida has had…

Nothing will change here in the United States as long as guns are valued more than children.
The Far-Right love to champion their «pro-life» agenda but at the same time they don’t value the life of that child once it is born – especially if it is not a white child. I will never understand how the Far-Right Evangelical Christians can be so vehemently against abortion and just as vehemently pro-assault rifles. Their attitude seems to be that life is precious until it is born and then if that life is abused or malnourished or gets snuffed out at school or on the street by an assault rifle then that’s just too bad. As long as a vocal segment of our population think there is nothing wrong with regular citizens owning assault-style rifles, nothing will change.
Life is cheap now in the US and the NRA owns the US Congress. This is NOT what the nation’s founders had in mind when they gave us «the right to bear arms.» The nonchalant attitude most politicians have about guns created a system in which that 28-year-old in Nashville was able to legally purchase seven firearms (including the two assault rifles and the pistol she took into that school) in five different gun stores and that sent up no red flags. In the end, each of us is responsible for our actions but, when a government encourages a culture in which guns are glorified, I don’t know why anyone is surprised when things go so horribly wrong.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
You are absolutely right on all these points Janet. As long as the NRA rules, nothing will change. But they don’t realise that God is in charge…

Sorry, but only «people» kill. This was a very troubled girl, and I guess her father, whom she lived with, wasn’t paying attention. There are always signs before these things happen. And, as I’ve mentioned before, the mental health system in the USA sucks, partly because the mentally ill have more rights than other people and there’s nowhere to place the seriously mentally ill. And the «duty to warn» only applies when people have named a specific target. Just saying you want to kill someone is not enough to commit someone or to take away their rights. The 28-year-old was not a child and had every right to purchase a gun. She did not, however, have the right to kill other people. Once again, this was a failure of the mental health system and her family and friends, not the NRA, not the Republicans, and not the American people. Most of these mass shooters have no history of law enforcement issues. And when they do, we usually find out that the FBI failed. Millions of people in the USA own guns, and they don’t use them to commit crimes or murder people. It’s true – the nation’s founders did not have mass murders in mind. Their reasoning was to prevent government overreach, tyranny, and totalitarianism, which still applies today. I personally support the Second Amendment and the right of the people to bear arms, and I will not do otherwise. I have fifteen years of experience working in inpatient psychiatric facilities, and this issue came up more than once. A lot of people who should be committed and evaluated are not because the families refuse to let it happen. Furthermore, we have a party in control that lets serious criminals out on the street and looks the other way when they commit rape, murder, and steal everything that’s not locked up. It’s not as simple as you and the other commentators suggest, especially since you no longer live here. Things are not like they were in the past when people respected law and order. Sorry to argue with you because I respect you and your opinions, and I know you worked as a policeman. But times have changed in this country. When I worked with troubled adolescents, they thought school shootings were «cool,» which is one reason we get copy cat shooters. And the news media is worthless in this country. All they care about is ratings and revenue.

Children should not have to worry about their safety. I feel so horrible about where the world is today and fear there is no going back. Unfortunately, all the tears I cry won’t change it.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
You’re right, in the end it’s just sadness and loss. Republican politicians in the US (for the most part) are funded and owe their careers to the NRA and they value more the sale and proliferation of guns than the safety of children. Until that paradigm changes, unfortunately we will see more of these horrific events. No matter what some may say, guns kill and only guns! If guns are not readily available these killings would not occur. Here in Europe guns are against the law and we have never had such incidents. Thank you.

I agree. Nobody should be allowed to buy an assault weapon – let alone 7 of them which is what this person owned. Every day it gets harder to justify staying here. I have had countless conversations about moving if the random shootings/violence gets worse. For now I live in a very safe area, but I fear that could change in an instant.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
It is definitely something to think about. I feel very safe since I’ve returned to Europe. I hope things begin to change once senators and representatives are elected that are not in the pockets of the NRA…

It is, a terrible thing for sure. But as long as politicians in Washington and in the states support the NRA and the NRA bankrolls them, the proliferation of guns will continue and everyone will be in danger.
