Edgar Degas is one of my favourite artists not just because of his mastery of drawing and of creating fluid motion, but because of his theories of art. He rejected all ideas of inspiration, temperament and spontaneity, in other words intuitive painting. He stressed that art was contrived, a process resulting from research and investigation. In his case he usually studied the great past masters. That to me is the most important thing about art. Art is created, it does not flow spontaneous. Just like an actor has to rehearse, practice, fine tune his voice and body, an artist has to do the same to paint. In any event, Degas is one of the great masters now and an important figure in Art History.
