«Still Life», or is it still life? It surprises me sometimes that our Earth still exists, that life still thrives and that people continue to dance through the interminable cycles of birth and death in this plane of existence we inhabit, albeit…and in my opinion…temporarily. We are the stewards of the Earth and we have failed miserably.
Another January 1! Whoopie! Happy New Year! People screamed their heads off last night at the Puerta del Sol (Madrid), Times Square (New York) and in thousands of other plazas and squares, salons, restaurants, bars, alleys, gutters, holes in the wall, or wherever… Such happiness! Such bliss! So much talk of togetherness, of peace, of prosperity for the nations, of equality, of the end of racism, domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, obesity, disease et cetera.
Yet, once the alcohol has left the bodies, and one and all return to their routines, their villages, their jobs, their homes, their existence, no one remembers anymore all those nice things they said. La vie continue mes amis.
Corporate moguls continue to enrich themselves from the fat of the land, from exploiting the little people, from taking more than their share. Dictators continue to bomb innocent people. Populist leaders continue to destroy the lifestyle and society of countries, pilfering the traditions and driving the masses to kill and be killed in the streets. Politicians continue to lie. Priests, Rabbis, Imams, continue to guide their flock towards uncertainties because religion is shrouded in mystery. Industry continues to pollute the Earth and destroy our ecosystems. Food continues to contain all sorts of chemicals. Water is mostly polluted or filled with toxic agents. Poverty continues to claim its stake in the lives of the majority of the inhabitants of our world and the rich continue to flaunt their lavish lifestyle while many of us, like sheep, continue to believe, to accept and to render unto the elite praises. So-called «influencers» are telling people now what they should wear, what they should listen to and what they should watch. And if it isn’t one of them, it is a series in Netflix that reminds us that the sun will soon boil all living things and that we must live in caves, deep underground in darkness to survive.
But to survive what? To survive for what? What are «they» doing to our head? Nothing of what is said through the internet, through «mainstream» media, or that emanates from the mouths of elected public servants, supposed experts and others «in charge», is the truth. So why do we absolve them of their great sins and believe their words?
Because we live not in an organic plane that generates and regenerates itself with us being an integral part of nature. We have abandoned that. We don’t even know what nature is. We live in a «still life» painting, a style that in Spanish and French means «dead» nature. So, instead of resolving to lose those 10 (or 20) pounds, why don’t we resolve to wake up and live!
