Very interesting Francis. His self portraits were very interesting. I liked the next to the last self portrait the best. I liked what you said about showing our most intimate selves through our work. I agree that that is the most interesting thing in all art, telling our truth. Thank you and you two have a great day. Big hugs from us. 🦋🥰

    1. Thank you so much Joni, yes, our work as artists is sometimes very self-revealing, especially self-portraits. Have a great day and big hugs to you both!

We will have to agree to disagree about Van Gogh. Our response to any art form (music, written, visual) is subjective. So one’s tastes are individual.

      2. I agree completely. One’s tastes are individual and governed by one’s own thoughts, beliefs, influences or whatever one want. No disagreement here Pat. Cheers and happy «Middle of the Week» (Thrursday-Friday)

It seems as though artists have a tendency to get immersed inside their own world, whether it be somebody like Van Gogh or Basquiat, but it never seems to do them any good in the end. Take care my friend, and enjoy the rest of your week 😊

    1. God point there Malc. Both of Van Gogh and Basquiat ended up the same way. The best way is to lead a balanced life and it helps if you’ve the right people around you. You too, take good care and enjoy the rest of the week. All the best.

It was interesting to see the progression of his looks from year-to-year through his self portraits. He didn’t just age, but his face became more gaunt which was, no doubt, a reflection of his physical and mental state. Thanks for showing that. I hadn’t looked at them chronological order before.

    1. There’s a lot to be seen and learned from self portraits Janet. Some artists are consumed by that form of introspection which might border on narcissism…

  5. i find it amazing he did self portraits actually Francis. What do you make of it and what do you think he was trying to portrait? 💗💞

    1. Well, self portraits are a way to keep a visual record of your progress as an artist, your craft and as well your psychological state. I think Van Gogh thought a lot about his state of mental health and either consciously or randomly, he did keep a record of it through his self portraits. And while he was in his worst states and interned at hospital, he never painted, contrary to popular belief. Thank you Cindy. All the best.
