Here is one tragic story, but not so unusual. We’ve seen it all before…
What do you think of this artist? Do you agree with critics in the US that have said that he is the greatest Black artist of the XX C.?
Take a brief look at his work…
Cheers…

I don’t like to categorise people where subjects like this are concerned Francesc. It matters not a jot to me whether an artist is black, female, or Martian. It’s whether their work appeals to me or not that counts, and I’m sorry to say that Basquiat’s work doesn’t.

Bueno. Su pintura me parece muy parsonal. A mí no me disgusta.

You’re not alone. I’m not interested in race, birthplace or ethnicity (My God I had enough of classifying people from my years in the States!) as I do not believe in any of those categories or groupings, so I agree. But there are so many, especially in the US, who like to group people according to what they think they are and do not take into consideration that there are many people who look like they are something else and they are not. In any event, I don’t like to group people by colour or anything else. I like some of Basquiat’s work, I must say that I do find most of his work appealing, although I prefer to note in him his development as an artist and that is quite noticeable in his later works. And bear in mind that he was a sharp one. When he was a «graffiti artist» (or delinquent) he used to place his «messages» next to famous galleries in SoHo (NYC) so they would readily be seen and when people asked he started being represented by those galleries. He also befriended Andy Warhol and that catapulted him to instant New York fame (in a New York minute like they say over there), so he had it all well calculated. Unfortunately he did not calculate his life in reference to his drug use and died of a heroin overdose at 27 (or he killed himself, no one knows).
Cheers Malc and all the best.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply Francesc. I’m glad that we agree on the topic I raised. As for the artist, although I’m not entirely with you on his work, it’s good to see that you appreciate the fact that graffiti artists can become accepted by serious artists as well. It’s just a shame that he threw it all away, but as you said, it’s happened before and it’ll happen again.

That’s true Malc. And although I do not look favourably upon vandalism, I am quite a fan of the true street artists that decorate towns all around Europe, and good ones they are and artists they are and an artist asks permission first. All the best my friend!

Thanks for sharing, have you ever heard Gray, his band, before. Ahead of his time

You’re very welcome. I’ve just heard little bits and pieces of the band, but being that I am very much interested in experimental music and in particular abstract jazz, I will look further. If you know any links you wish to share I would greatly appreciate it. Cheers and all the best.

Just Google search and you will get lots of hits. None of the members really play an instrument, utterly original

Thank you I will do that. Appreciate it.

He did a little of everything, from being an experimental musician to street graffiti «artist» to painter, and then to drug addict and death…
